Crafting Process

From Vanguard WikiSpheres

Contents

Introduction

To make an item, you must use the appropriate Crafting Station for the piece:
  • raw materials are made into components at a refining station.
  • components are crafted into an item at a finishing station.

For each of these stations, the process of creating the resulting item from the starting items is the same. It consists of three basic steps, each with it's own window:

  • Crafting Setup
  • Crafting Table Setup
  • Crafting Process

To begin the process, right click on the crafting station.

Note: a tutorial walk-through of this process can be found in Crafting - Getting Started

Crafting Setup

You must first choose the recipe you will use to craft the item you want to make. The Crafting Setup window displays the recipes you can use at the current station, grouped by type for easier access. Click on the recipe name to read about it.

After selecting a recipe, choose one of the buttons at the bottom of the window:

  • click on Begin to set up the crafting station.
  • click on Cancel to stop the crafting process.

Crafting Table Setup

The crafting table has an inventory; this is the set of ingredients and utilities that you will be using during the crafting process. When you begin your career, you can place three items on the station; as you progress, you become more efficient Once you begin actually crafting an item, you can't reach into your pack for the odd utility, so choose wisely grasshopper.

The setup window shows a list of items in up to three groupings:

  • recipe components
  • required utilities
  • other utilities

As you select and deselect items in these lists, the table inventory window will display your current choice.

You can make this step easier by letting the station perform an "Auto Table Setup". This automatically selects the items you probably need. However, it won't choose any optional utilities and, if you have multiple starting components, it may choose the wrong one. You can adjust the selection manually before beginning to craft.

When you have finished with the Crafting Table Setup, choose one of the buttons at the bottom of the window:

  • click on Begin to start crafting.
  • click on Back to return to the recipe selection step.
  • click on Cancel to stop the crafting process.

Make the item

It is now time to make the desired item. You are faced with several windows during the process:

  • The station inventory window (Table)
  • The crafting process window (labeled with the basic crafting skill you will be using)
  • The complications window (Complication)

Windows

Table Inventory

The Table window shows your current station inventory. With it, you can keep an eye on your utility use while crafting.

Crafting Process Window

The crafting process window displays the current state of the crafting process and lets you perform crafting actions and swap toolbelts when needed. It has the following displays and controls:

  • The current quality of the resulting item is shown on the upper left. It lists the current grade and shows a progress bar so that you can see your progress to the next grade.
  • Your total and remaining action points are shown in the upper right.
  • The crafting stages are displayed across middle. The action families available for use during each stage are shown (the icons for the families in the current stage are full size; those for the other stages are smaller). You can click on a family icon to see the available Crafting Actionss in that family.
  • The progress bar is displayed in the middle of the bottom, below the name of the crafting stage; this shows your progress through the current stage.
  • The Toolbelt button at the lower left allows you to select the toolbelt (one of three) that contains the tool you need for the the next action you wish to perform.
  • The Cancel button on the lower right allows you to stop the crafting process.
  • Icons for the available crafting actions for the selected action family are displayed below the window.

Complications

The complications window pops up when you encounter one or more complications in the process. The top row shows each complication; below it is displayed the action family that can be used to remedy the complication. As with action families on the process window, clicking on the family icon shows the icons of the available remedy actions below the window.

Below each complication is a progress bar. This shows your progress in remedying the complication.

The Process

The goal of any crafting process is to create an item of the highest quality grade possible without running out of action points. You are allocated a set number of action points when you start the recipe that may be used across all four stages; actions generally consume some of the points and, if you run out, you may not be able to perform any more actions to complete the item.

Making the Item

The crafting process is split into four stages:

  • Stage 1 allows you to select the component items (or raw materials) to craft. Unless you are making items for a work order, these must be in the station inventory.
  • Stages 2 and 3 allow you to make the item; it is during these steps that you can improve the quality of the item.
  • Stage 4 finishes the process.

Each crafting action can advance your progress in completing the current stage, improve the quality of the item, or both. As you become knowledgeable about the process and your available actions, you will be able to determine when you can safely add to quality without risking failure.

  • In stage 1, each action family must be used once; when used the ingredient selected is consumed.
  • In stages 2 and 3, multiple actions from all available action families can be performed.
  • In stage 4 a single finishing action is selected.

When stage 2 or 3 has multiple action families associated with it, they represent different activities needed to complete the stage. Actions from each family must be used to advance to the next stage in equal amounts; however, a given family may be used to add as much quality as desired as long as it is still eligible to be used to advance the progress.

After you complete the process you may "loot" the station for the completed item.

Dealing with Complications

Various complications can crop up during the crafting process. These complications degrade the process in some way and you may need to remedy them to successfully complete the item; if you don't remedy them, they will fade after a set number of crafting actions are completed (Duration). There can be at most three active complications.

To remedy a complication, click on the action family icon and choose a remedy action. Each remedy has a cost in action points and may require a tool or utilities. You will need to apply remedies until the progress bar under the complication is empty.

Assembling a Complete Item

You assemble items together on the Assembly workbench. Process starts with a complete item and creates a new, improved item.

When you right click on the assembly table, you must choose the recipe to make from the list provided. The list is organized by profession (top drop-down menu) and a set of three other menus (?).
