Noone ever said agro would be dealt with the same way in Vanguard as it was in EQ. Do not forget that.
In fact it has been stated many times that it is completely different. It's not all about damage anymore. I believe not only will it be viable for a tank to use 1H + shield to tank, it will be near impossible NOT to. I wouldn't want my MT using a 2H weapon with no shield that's for sure. That extra armor can mean a lot. Besides, agro is different in Vanguard. It is less "one tank per mob" as it is "one tank per squishie". Agro will likely be extremely chaotic, and not 'hold-able' for any length of time. Losing agro will be commonplace, the skilled will be those who can take that in stride. -Eclipse

i still think that toons will be able to lock in aggro, but it will be easily lost and only the skilled will be able to keep them locked in... i mean, your not really gonna see your target running to someone behind you if you bash them in the head when they try to move, now are you?
If they intend for combat to be as realistic as they say, then a good old shield upside the head should stun them long enough to re-posistion yourself and prevent them from advancing, so at this point if anything the mob will spin in circles finding out who it wants to smack.... which will most likely, be... the warrior, or given tank who smacked him with a shield =p

Well, if we speak of realism...then the mobs would be very pre-disposed to attack the healers and casters.
I believe that agro-lock is basically a thing of the past. So we'll see what happens I guess. I think the skill would be for the tank to be able to put himself between his enemy and his squishie teammates at all times even when his enemy is obviously trying to attack someone other than the tank. After a short while of unsuccessful attempts at squashing that robed guy who keeps pelting him with fire, he would again turn to the tank in a fear-blinded rage. My opinion only. -Eclipse

I was actually watching a series called Mahou Sensei Nejima, and they had a take on the role of a tank.
Okay, so in the show, every mage has a fighter that assists them. Mages are not only physically weak, but they can't cast any spells if you just interrupt them with a bonk on the head or flick their forehead or anything. So the fighter has to ward off physical attacks that might interrupt the mage so he can unleash his great power. Well, that's what Vanguard seems to be doing. Not sure if melee classes will have spell interrupt abilities, but we'll see. Still, the mage definitely had the "aggro" being the strongest opponent, he just had a very large weakness that the fighter could help defend against. When two mages met, their fighters would each try to interrupt the other mage while defending their own, leading to fighter vs fighter battles while the mages supported with spells. Leads to exciting battle, much better than just Aggro-lock, where you can choose to support the tank by attacking his enemy or target the enemy mage with your own spells.
