Ideally, the tank that people want on raids will depend on what they are raiding. It might be a warrior one raid, and a paladin the next. That's what the developers are shooting for, and I am really hoping that they can pull it off.

Well...I'm hoping I don't fall into a 'only' DPS role, my main focus for a warrior would be to tank and to tank well.
I play a rogue in WoW and I'm next to useless for anything short of DPSing things. I want to actually be important this game and I can't see being any more important then being Main Tank, or one of the Main Tanks on raids. Those of you who have played WoW know what I mean.

i play EQ .... most groups want a setup in there like... healer, slower, tank ... DPS. DPS. DPS. so dpsing makes up 50% of the casual group in EQ, save kite groups where the whole entire group is DPS.
DPS is by FAR important in casual groups and raids..... im sure any veteran of any game has seen a raid wipe with mobs at 0% hp up to 5% hp.... only difference in a DPS and a tank is that tanks are more glorified for their achievements... kinda like defensive players on a football team... when they are at their finest, you don't hear about them.... its only when they screw up and make huge mistakes that they become noticeable... but quite obviously, they are a very important part of the overrall football team.. i mean, really, when was the last time you read about a defensive players excellent sack in the paper.... you didn't. you read about that scrawny kid who jumped a billion feet into the air and caught the ball, and then had his feet taken out from under him when he was comming back to earth =p dps is not useless god sir knight, you should be shot in your toe o.o

With multiple mob encounters and lack of supreme agro skills looks like multiple tanks will be more viable in both groups and raids. So Maybe your perfect group would have some changes.
Or at least we all hope so, this being the fighter boards. =) Thats why I was kind of hoping for 8 person groups. Perfect group would probably be 2 tanks, 2 healers and 4 dps. And if it was done right the dps could be balanced between arcane and melee, having 2 of each archtype. Obviosly dont know enough about the game to get to upset about this though, will have to wait and see. |

Right now, because of the fact that Sigil is leaning heavily towards 6 man groups, I am going to have my static group made up of 2 different types of tanks, 1 offensive fighter, 1 offensive caster (necro), and 2 healers. This could definately change in the future when the different abilities for each class become available. But, for now this sounds like the most solid route. We will see in good time.
P.S. > I am leaning towards a Dread Knight for my 2nd tank as I think it would fit nicely with my necromancer. Not to mention their crowd control abilities that have been revealed to us through Fanguard. |

i can't really even begin to say what a 'perfect group' would be like in vanguard all i have to say is that ....
I hope there isn't one if there is a perfect group then once again you have certain toons being looked for in groups and then you don't really have 'balance' per se, unless the people who arn't looked for in groups can solo group content... in wich case, yet again, no balance..... so hopefully, the perfect group would be centered around what zone you are hunting in.... hunting in a zone full of undead, grab a pally tank, cleric healer, necromancer ( im GUESSING that undead will probabally have a natural resistance to the dk's fear... or maybe more holy monsters are resistant to fear... not sure how that will work out... or maybe it would just work on all mobs.... ) so if i guess correctly, a DK tank wouldn't do as much good as the paladin tanking... or maybe a high end zone with hard hitting mobs, that have a ton of hp.... snag a warrior, cleric and disciple, then fill the last slots with high DPS ( Berserker comes to mind ) hopefully gruip builds are situational and its not just * oh i have 5 friends that play VG and we all log on at the same time and go farm ultra rare camps in ANY zone we feel like hunting in... that would be leet, if you ask me... but then of course you would always gets invite to certain zones playing whatever class.... but it would be well worth it, because that means your getting group invites =P

In terms of aggro, is it going to be viable for a warrior (or any tank) to use a shield full time when tanking? It was frustrating in Everquest when you had a shield that would give you a hefty bonus to tanking, but you couldn't use it when you tanked because of aggro issues.

Yeah, I know we can't dual wield...but I'm just curious if a one hander + shield is viable while tanking, or if we will have to use a two hander in order to keep aggro.
In EverQuest, it was very tough keeping aggro if you weren't using dual wield or a two hander, and I hope it's not like that in Vanguard. |
