I think I get what they are doing.
In EQ, you get your ususal "pet" spell every spell level. To me, "pet" seems to be the wrong word, because you are really summoning a "minion" to do your bidding. Perhaps in Vanguard you will have an actual "pet", rather then a summoned minion? It is possible, and could be compared along the lines that sixguns posted above. |

It sounds to me like this is more of a fluff or roleplay addition, which is not saying that's a bad thing at all. Gargamel had Azrael, Jafar had Iago. I personally think touches like that make the world have more personality, feel more alive. Course, I view MMOGs as an escape as opposed to playing a game with my "toon", heh.
