Confused about throwing knives

I wanted to try out a ranged weapon for my bard and got her some standard throwing knives from the weapons vendor. Character sheet says "Throwing, 1 point", knife description says this is sufficient, so I thought I could use them, but somehow I fail to get them to work. I tried equipping the knives, which puts them into the ammo slot (as expected), then I made a hotkey for the knives, but when I target an enemy NPC and click the hotkey, nothing happens. Do I need to get a bow or something before it works? Thanks for your help!

On the Abilities button, general abils tab there is a 'ranged weapon' icon which is a bow.

Try pressing that button with knife in ammo. If it doesn't work change it to the other ranged slot, not sure if it defaults to going to 'quiver' slot or reg ranged weap slot...

If I'm not mistaken, you need at least one knife in your ranged slot. I usually max stack in both of them. Drag the ranged slot to a hotkey and use that as your trigger.

Also you need to click and hold the hotkey waiting for the meter to max out before releasing they key, and thus the knife.
