I banned swearing from my guild chat simply because you dont know who's reading it, they might find it offensive or simply be too young to read it.

Freedom of speech is a beautiful thing, and whether you choose to speak like a shakesperean character or a fish monger, try to do it with respect of those around you.

Re: New Class Specific Forums

Seeing as we were on the subject already. GaliemVaelant on the Official Vanguard Forums made a very good post on the history and the use of curse words and why they are silly in modern society. While I don't agree with all of his points it was a good explanation nonetheless.

Quote:

Of course, there are still appropriate and inappropriate times to discuss things, the thing is, in the days that I reference, people were MUCH more morally upright in general. There was no grey area or middle ground, like there is today. You had your gentlemen, and you had your uncouths. You had your ladies, and you had your ho's.

With time, specific words, such as the f-word gained the most focus. The reason is, since slang tends to be localized to certain sub cultures, the words we know as curse words today would be used by the nastiest of the nasty.

With even more time, certain words became more offensive than others, and they began to be used more often when the user wanted to express anger, or when the speaker wanted to express a general disrespect for either the listener or the subject of their speech.

Due to the anger/disrespect tendacies in their use, people associated these words with curses that in older times would be used in place of bad words. Thus, they became known as "curse words", and using them became known as "cursing". This was perpetuated by the fact that people often were wishing something on the listener or subject that was considered to be bad when such words were used.

With even more time, the cannonical acceptance of a specific list of words was in place.

Now, it all makes absolutely no sense. People are not offended by the topics associated by the words. They're offended by the word itself. People aren't offended by the intent behind the words' usage. They're offended by the actual syllables.

Thus, the whole thing has become pretty darn silly. In my opinion, those who whine about cursing are immature and usually either uneducated or too self righteous. I'm not the only one who believes this, but since it's a societal standard to avoid using these words now, people avoid using them so that they don't get fired or banned from a forum, or perhaps even just to avoid lectures or general ire.

What is even more silly, if you consider the original connotation of these words, I can say the exact same thing, and will not gain the same ire. For example, I can say on this forum that I screwed Sally without being banned. That's pretty stupid, but it's just the way that things are.

Even though we are a civilization that values freedom and rational thought, we allow the uneducated and overly (usually religiously) self righteous to rule us in day to day life. This too makes no sense, but it's just the way that things are.

There is a positive aspect of this, though. Avoiding the use of such words is a simple matter, but it is accepted as a sign of respect. Of course, one's avoiding the usage of such words does not technically mean that one respects anyone, and that thought is illogical.

Nonetheless, those smart and mature enough to accept that this dynamic exists, and that there is nothing we can do to change it, can use that knowledge as a tool. If you want people to think that you're generally a nice, intelligent, respectable person, then don't curse. It doesn't really matter if you are either nice, smart, or respectable, but rather if people THINK that you are. Yeah. We're pretty screwed up.

There are thousands of little tricks like this that someone can use to fool people, and this often leads to people who are actually very mean, stupid, or generally nasty people to gain positions in society that we're supposed to protect in order to protect ourselves. Nonetheless, since the folks of low intellect, low education, and extremist morality rule us, we can do nothing to change this.

Re: New Class Specific Forums

Thats a fairly misguided post from Galiem. I really dislike posts that take someones opinion and present it as fact.

Re: New Class Specific Forums

I remember when this thread was about the class forums, how i long for those days, now they've vanished like the pie i just ate, good times :P

by the way this is probably one of those threads to move to the off topic section.

*Puts on his Glip hat*

I think it's time to lock this one, since as Vade said it's drifted way off topic. If you want to continue the language debate, by all means start up a new thread in Off Topic!
