Re: Instancing in Online Gaming

Aye, well aware of no required content in Vanguard, however, since the thread title was "Instancing in online gaming" and not "Instancing in Vanguard" I was speaking in general terms

For instance, in EverQuest 2 they had required content(in the terms i'm speaking of) of classes and subclasses and not sure about the other classes but to become a brawler I had to defeat an NPC. Thankfully, that portion was instanced. I wouldn't want to wait in line just so I could advance in levels and that to me is *required* content

It's okay though, darned Internet - hard to decode what anyone is saying without the tone of their voice to help!

Lol @ internet!

You do bring up a good point though. Recently, I had the unfortunate experience of playing a horribly managed MMO, ROSE Online. Managed by the notrious Gravity Interactive, they somehow managed to reset everyone's quests after a patch. Before the patch, I had to do a quest that took me about 4 hours, and consisted of waiting for one mob that spawned about every 30 seconds to a minute in ONE area, and manage to get the first hit on it, while competing with whoever else was there. As I was a CLERIC (mind you not the VG mace-wielding cleric), it was extremely difficult even to hit the mob. The reward for this quest was being able to access the next "planet," which was basically the level 60+ zone. Now, imagine, after one seriously messed-up patch, Hundreds of people standing in one zone, trying to get first hit on a mob with a complete crap spawn rate, and a 5% chance of getting the quest item so they could get some halfway-decent exp in their own level area. In that respect, I know exactly where you're coming from =P

I stopped playing shortly thereafter >_<

Edit: Actually took the time to read my post. Run-ons galore!

Aye, that's exactly what i'm talking about. Things like that are the only thing I would want instanced.

Re: Instancing in Online Gaming

A rare instance is cool but when I play an MMO I don't want to be constantly whisked off away from everybody else. Part of the experience is having multiple groups running around in the same dungeon.

Re: Instancing in Online Gaming

I guess why instancing is even brought up is because in D2, you had to play in an instanced "server", hosted by a player, with a maximum of 8 players. Then Blizzard brought this "clever" *cough* idea to WoW. I'm not even familiar with any other game that incorporated instancing at the level WoW did, or even if at all. Are there?

Re: Instancing in Online Gaming

EQ2 is running a close second on instancing but WoW definitely takes the cake.

Re: Instancing in Online Gaming

Well, i'm not sure who actually started it but my first experience with instanced dungeons in MMORPG's was EverQuest: Lost Dungeons of Norrath.
