Everyone has their own definition of what constitutes enjoyment. Mine is what makes the best crafter.

Dwarves = Blacksmith
Elves = Jewelry, Spell Scrolls, etc...

That said, some things do need to balance out a little, such as melee classes having to get close and take AOEs and such whereas ranged casters don't. If melees have a little advantage that is offset by a ranged class being able to do damage safely and at will, then that's still even in my book.
Well I don't think melee and caster DPS need to be completely even. Casters DPS tends to have more utility than your melee DPS does for one thing. Caster DPS is also normally your biggest burst DPS, finish off the healer when it's low before it can cast a heal, etc while melee DPS tends to be the highest over a long encounter. It's a good formula and hopefully each DPS class can fill the roll of melee or caster DPS similiarly well. I do wonder what they will do for rogue and monk utility though if this is to be the case.

Re: Dps

Best DPS?

Well, I think the best DPS class is going to be played by the class who has a player behind it who is knowledgeable about the class, has picked out a solid gear set and such. I think the base DPS of all the DPS classes will be pretty even across the line, the people who will shine will be those who know how to manage their class' abilities.

I've never understood people who want to be the best at xxx skill so they pick a certain race class combo because of one ability and 5 more points of int. Classes and abilities change with time, one class may have the most damaging burst dps spell by 5 damage then an expansion or a focus spell can come out and a different class might be able to do 5 more dps than them. What do they then? re roll a new class until the next time its changed? I would love for VG to have it so if you are in X situation A class is best dps, if you are in Y situation, B class is best dps and if you are in Z situation, C class is best but if in X/Y/Z situation but playing with Class D then Class E is best DPS. Variety is the spice of life ey?

Many people do just that. I'm not one of them, but there are definately habitual Flavor of the Month people.

I had a friend in DAoC who had something like 18 characters that he took to max level (I only ever managed 1) because he kept moving to the overpowered class until it got nerfed.

thats crazy... i know some people like that to, and for EQ one i was one of those "type" of people, i had my bard that i nearly made it to max, only 65 = / and i had a clerc over 50 and every other job except for rogue over lvl 40. since then i have been a single job grinder, for the most part ^^

as for why Maxing your DPS to make you happy? well i have never really been a DPS Person, i always played bard or a healer, or some sort of support job. when every1 is happy, and the xp is rolling in. im happy

Re: Dps

I don’t think it will be as simple as one class being the best dps at all times.

I would not be surprised if the sorcerer has the most short burst dps but then if there is a long fight, DoT classes would then overtake the sorcerer in the dps department.

As for melee, I would go with the rogue for hardest hit which would come in spikes via backstab, and maybe the berserker when the class gets patched in sometimes later on for base damage dps.
