Re: Role-Playing or Playing a Role?
I usually pick the class first, since that's really what is the determining factor if it's fun or not. If you don't enjoy what you are doing, then there's not point in doing it. I tend to stick with utility type classes, the ones that can do a little bit of everything. After that, I'll pick a race that has good lore, and style. Then the character development kicks in and there's a persona and personality in my mind for that character.
Now when it actually comes to RPing, I tend to only RP in chat channels that are show to everyone. I rarely RP in group, and almost never RP in guild chat. But if you see my character and he's talking outside of either of those, that's how the character is. |

Re: Role-Playing or Playing a Role?
I would start by gathering info on the lore and the classes available or changes that have been made on them. For vanguard the Druid and Bloodmage(lBM will spoil the day
) seems the most interesting to play.I always choose class first then the Race according to my class and lore but my favorite classes are Clerics,Shamans,Druids and monks. If I choose Cleric the Race will be (Human,Elf,Half-elf,High Elf,halfling).Shamans will be Dark elf,Orcs, human.Druids will be Orcs,Human,Wood elf and so on.But vanguard the choice is little more complex as there are more interesting Race. |

Re: Role-Playing or Playing a Role?
I guess I choose the class first about 50% of the time, race first the other half. I am a roleplayer at heart and tend to build my character with goals and a background in mind.
For example, the first character I am working on for V:SoH is a heavily armoured knight of sorts who follows a code of chivalry and virtue --> Paladin. I am in the mood for European style arms and armor, therefore the race is Thestran. And of the Thestran races, the Thestran Human is what I 'feel' like playing atm. The next thing I will do is delve into the Lore again and get a feel for the history and geography of Thestra. I will come up with a name and background story for my character and finally create him after V:SoH is released. ![]()

Re: Role-Playing or Playing a Role?
Well lets see here.
Ever since I started playing games I've pretty much always been a melee fighter. I also like the hybrid classes, but they have to at least have a kind of cool weapon and chain armor. For me one of the most important things is the look of the character(pretty much just the armor). IRL I'm a tall big guy so I don't play the plate-wearing guy to be something that is contrary to me IRL, I just love big plate armor. But I don't always play those type of characters, I also like the Bard, the Dirge(debuff bard from eq2), and swashbuckler. My choice of class in this game is going to rely on a few things. 1. What classes can use polearms/spears 2. What classes can wear heavy(cool looking) armor and not have to be a boring main tank. 3. What classes the vulmane can be because thats the class that initially caught my eye but that could change. 4. Even if I create my guy, if I see 5 guys who are the same class/race and I don't feel unique enough I'll re-roll 5. If they have anything like a dirge or swashbuckler So thats kinda how I'm gonna decide with this game.

Re: Role-Playing or Playing a Role?
hmmmm. I'd say I choose race first. I can't play a game where I don'l like how my charecter looks. For me appearance is more then anything. My favorite thing to do is play ironies with my charecters. I like having charecters that normally wouldn't be the class they are. (example) I like High elves more then any other elf, but traditionally high eleves are haughty and proud beings. I prefer making a high elf thats more dark, quiet, and at times cruel charecter. THen when it comes to class for the dark quiet and cruel elf. I choose something I personally like more, a heavy armor class that uses magic. there's 2 I can think off the top of my head Paliden, and Dread Knight. But since I love Irony don't be surprised if you run into a cruel high elf dread knight on your journies.

Re: Role-Playing or Playing a Role?
This is a nice conversation. =) While I have seen some great roleplayers it's really hard for someone not trained in acting to adequately flesh a character out. ( not impossible but really hard) I also like to choose a race first with a starting region a close second. I always find the female avatars look better then the male ones, but I just can't seem to play one with the added things you get tells about.
classes I am reading as much as I can before the game access to try and decide what I might be able to handle and what sounds like fun to me for one reason or another. I do sometimes end up in game makeing a change of class, looking for the right one for me. Also I admit looks are important to me, shrug. Long stays in dreary looking area's tends to add a layer of desolation to my play mood so I shy away from them unless I can't and need to be in one for awhile. 1 race 2 starting location 3 character class

Re: Role-Playing or Playing a Role?
typicaly i always go with race first, class second, starting location last. i usually go with wood elf, or some form of elf. prolly cause of a book i read once apon a time, though im contemplating the Vulmane, im mean wolfy people... common thats just cool! however they cant be paladin, which brings me to my next point.
i have no clue why, but i always go with bard... and i end up hating it in the long run, though they are fun to roleplay with. in RL i have no musical talent, and i dont have any desire to gain any... maybe its the fact that i cant play that drives me to bard? it was right around my first time in band class which lasted all of a week lol. anyway this go around i think im gonna go with paladin seems thats what i end up playing eventually and i always love it. starting region really isnt that important to me, it really depends on how comfortable i feel in the town. i always play around a bit befor deciding on that one. unless i hate the storyline associated with it... ex: FFXI i could not live in the town called windurst cause the TaruTaru leaders are retards... and the bastok president is dumb... and actually i dont like the princes of Sandy either, but they were the lesser of the 3 evils lol... if you didnt get that dont worry ^^
