fight or flight
I wonder what happens in Vanguard to your group when the tank dies?
In WoW it dont make a lot of difference the rest fight on each class is happy soloing, In AC2 my sorcerer turned and ran in the slim hope that I just might get away. EQ2 was somewhere between the two (probably even closer to WoW nowdays. |

Re: fight or flight
My personal opinion is that the group should keep on trucking. I ran into way too many instances in FFXI where anyone would die, or we'd get 1 extra mob, and everyone would panic and say RUNNNN. 'Course, that was usually serious business as party balance was HUGE in that game. However, it was entirely possible to recover from a loss without screwing other folks over with trains etc. My favourite leveling moments in that game, in fact, were those cases of victory over the impossible. A highlight was once when we were fighting crabs (yeah, yeah, not too interesting comparatively), and we kept getting agro'd in the middle of a fight, to the point where we had to take out 5 of them back to back... Only possible because A) We didn't run, B) We were a set group well-balanced and had leveled together for months. But still, very fun to overcome the seemingly impossible. I say fight!

Re: fight or flight
I am notorious for fighting the impossible and being rescued by other guildies. Usually the tactical decision fight or flee revolves around the healers, if they survive then REZ is possible, lose them and wipeout looms or at least a difficult run back from bind point.

Re: fight or flight
Depends on the situation and what class I play. If there is no possible way to win the fight (20 adds and the tank dies hehe), then I will be one of the first to flee. If its a borderline situation I have no problem trying to take it down even if I have to sacrifice myself tanking.

Re: fight or flight
We fight 9 times out of 10. Our absolute best moments were times when we'd get on autopull in EQ in a dungeon or out on the planes and just fight for 45 minutes straight. Chat virtually ended short of myself or an officer barking directions from time to time and everyone just clicked into their roles and made it happen. Its really magical when that happens. Makes you feel great when you pull off the impossible because you kept your head and played your A game.

Re: fight or flight
That just might highlight a problem in Vanguard. Imagine spending 45 minutes dancing through all the chains, spell turning, multiclass combos and the rest of the special attacks. I think after that I will need to sit down and recover perhaps with a nice single Malt whisky, never mind my char!!!

Re: fight or flight
In wow it seems running is very rare esp if the tank dies. I noticed groups going through dungeons without healers , Which I have even done. IN Eq your in trouble if the tank dying depending on adds and how close the critter is close to dieing. Thats pending also on the level crit your fighting. Soloing and leveling is way to easy in wow. I hope Vanguard will be able to delope a game that will be grp dependent (on each other and not just on a tank ). Thought leveling in EQ was pretty good and that you where not just relying on a tank even though important.

Re: fight or flight
It's another type of balance isnt it. make classes too independent and group play suffers. Make them too dependent and your group class mix gets to restrictive.
The aim is to encourage tactics rather than sheer brute force to overcome the mobs and keep the vulnerable members of your group alive but have sufficent independence to do damage on your own. That moment when your mage is the only member of the group left alive and the boss has 10 hp left, mana is gone, so all you got to kill him with is your staff!! |
