Whats up with the multiple witchhunts ?!?

Threads like "How to identify a gold farmer" & "Ban before warning" threads are really beccoming a concerning issue on forums on this site.

History shows us that witchhunts always results in innocent ppl getting burned, so why the eager to let history repeat itself?

These kinda threads will only lead to mistrust from user to user, and users reporting users strictly because of paranoia.

Yesterday I got two spamvertisement tells from obvious throwaway characters advertising a site that sells farmed gold. (To minimize free advertisement, I will not name the site.) I think that it is entirely appropriate for us to "hunt down" those who take part in such things and investigate them. If and only if there is proof that they are participating in such activities, they should be banned.

Yes those mail should be reported, but to "kill the gold farmers" & "how to indetify one" through behaviour is all the wrong things to do.

Gold farmers do have a certain behavior, and probably many will be identified by it. Killing them is a bad option, particularly in non-pvp servers, but I plan to report anyone whom I have good reason to believe is just farming and selling gold.

The titles of the posts are inflammatory (pardon the pun), but that's pretty standard on most forums. I might have used different language, but while I'm not a keen user of the ban-stick in general I'm afraid I have zero tolerance for gold-sellers. Find em, report em, get rid of em.

This is exactly what im talking about... By finding 10 gold farmers, you might hit 5 innocent players while doing it... Who are you to judge whos RMT or not.

Report advertisements, and leave rest to sigil.

For the most part, I think here we lean towards exactly what you're suggesting. Some of the hyperbole about hunting them down is -- or that's how I read it -- just that - hyperbole and venting.

I do agree entirely though, that the witch-hunt principle ends up hurting people far more than it helps, because it's totally unspecific. Someone may *think* I'm macroing because I didn't see their tell, or can't be arsed to respond because they're a rude bastard ("Make me Sword of Leetness for 5s kthx? Else you're a gouger! Oh and pull it out of your backside RIGHT NOW!"), or for whatever reason they want. That doesn't make me one. If someone could zap me for inattention, I'd get pretty irate. Then I'd report them for harassment, so nyerh.

So ya, I agree on the not-overboard thing. I dislike lynch mobs of any stripe, and games are pretty prone to the mob mentality. But I *do* want to encourage everything we can legitimately do to prevent gold-selling types from plying their trade in Vanguard, if for no other reason than that Sigil have said they're against it. If it were legitimate, I'd complain to myself and either lump it or move on. Since it isn't, I want them eradicated. They keep coming back, like cockroaches, but I sure like reporting them.

That is exactly why I oppose killing them but encourage reporting them. =D
