EU servers, server messages and PST
Let me say right at the outset, if anyone from Sigil is reading, IN EUROPE WE DO NOT RUN ON PST. No matter what you think the rest of the world does, PST is not the be all and end all time reference!
So for crying out loud stop giving us server messages in PST as it causes no end of confusion....a simple change to X amount of time left before server shutdown would be far more informative than 'hot fix at 11:30am PST' I know in general PST is GMT-8hrs but not everyone knows this, or considers it correct due to various dayligh savings times run around europe. Oh and a by the by....how about area specific messages....we are usually not affected by the american servers going down so we don't need their messages broadcast on EU servers ![]()

Re: EU servers, server messages and PST
I don't live in PST either and I live with it. I used to live in the UK and made do also. It's not that hard to work out time differences, and it means they don't have to broadcast information for all possible time zones. They *could* use GMT but then someone, somewhere, would complain that because they're in Italy, Germany, or Lithuania they can't tell when server down will be.
We're all relatively smart and grown up people - this isn't really such a huge issue. As for reset messages not being broadcast to the servers that aren't getting them, I have to agree that would be a good thing - seems it only adds to the confusion.

Re: EU servers, server messages and PST
I did suggest changing it to x mins/hours to shutdown.....i had worked out that Infineum was going down at 19:30 but as i was teamed with people from all over europe at the time we had a different opinion from everyone.
Easy solution....time until it happens not a time it will happen.

Re: EU servers, server messages and PST
That *is* a good idea. I'm trying to remember what game did that, but it certainly was helpful, whichever one it was. An in-game PST clock wouldn't hurt either - a "server time" I guess, though if they're going to do that then maybe the Euro servers should have GMT +1 (Amsterdam, right?) or something. At least that gives people on the server a common point of reference.

But still...it would make a lot more sense if the times were in GMT. Sure...people in Italy or somewhere might complain, but that's alot better than ALL of Europe complaining. Just my 2 cents.

Re: EU servers, server messages and PST
Eh, get a cheap digital clock and set it to PST.
PST is GMT-8 no matter where you are.... if you know your own timezone you should be able to figure it out. Now where it gets confusing is in the spring when PDT is GMT-7. But again, single digit calculations are not that rough. ![]() |

Re: EU servers, server messages and PST
It wouldn't really be so hard for sigil to put the times in GMT or CET...
What rubs me the wrong way is that we get msges about US servers goin down/up on Infineum. but NEVER have I even seen a mention about EU servers goin down/up when I played there.... ![]()

Re: EU servers, server messages and PST
The fact is this folks we, Sigil and SOE, are Pacific time zone companies, our main ops all operate on PST, the EU servers are on the US client servers.
Until localized servers and clients are available everything is kept PST to avoid confusion. Whenever there is a EU server patch only I will post in GMT if I remember, but the system wide broadcasts are tied to all servers, and therefore we cannot cater to both play times. Its frustrating, it might not make sense to everyone, but it's how and why it works. So at the very least I hope it answers your questions ![]() Thanks all! |
