Bob: I have an idea. What if we make it a game with NO gold!

Alice & George: Don't be daft, how will people buy anything. What are they going to do barter orc livers for a +3 sword of Hamster slaying?

Bob: No, seriously. We SAY it has gold, we even have coins etc BUT we make all the drops so miserably rare and all the quest rewards so cheap no one can gather a gold piece!!

George: Oh man! genius!

Alice: I can see it now. Every time a player kills a mob all they see is "This corpse has nothing on it for you"

George: No quest you can possibly do solo or in small groups pays more than a silver piece.

Bob: Hell NO....60 COPPER [falls off chair laughing]

The original EQ was very much the same way. You were dern happy with your silver pieces, thank you very much. Eventually, though, it came to be that everyone had hundreds of thousands of platinum pieces. The same will become true here as well, sadly.

You know, this makes me wonder. Has a game *ever* devalued money yet? I'm trying to think of a single example, but I assume that would be sort of like starting WWIII in the gaming community.

Not really the same type of game, but Diablo 2 did. No one cared a whiff for gold for the longest time.

I recall the same deal on Everquest 2 when I started last August or so. Seemed like it was going to take forever to start making some money, but had fun in the process, so I didn't worry much.

I don't worry...i fume sometimes at the multitude of corpses my ranger leaves in his wake where he can't even salvage a single toe nail let alone anything else....so i had to blow off a little steam...and at lvl 18, almost 19, i have finally broken the 1gp barrier!

I was farming Verdant Lurker gear last night, which has a NPC selling price of 0c. It's all pretty cheap on the broker, most drops from that area go for below 6s on my server.

Anyway I linked a bag full of the stuff I had in /shout and said that I was giving it away for free. A level 12 sent me a tell offering me 50s for 7 blue and one yellow item. 50 Silver... I don't know where he got that kind of money but I jumped at the offer, clearly he didn't know just how quickly that stuff drops...

I've probably made 3 or 4g so far, and I don't craft enough to make any money yet. I spend quickly and like sending the occasional 10s to an alt so I can tweak them through the early levels. Tin Ore is selling at 1s PP most of the time, that's pretty good if you ask me. Money isn't too hard to make in this game infact I think it's just right.

It's actually pretty damn easy in EQ2 if you ask me, all you need is a master chest or two, or a rare harvest of the right tier and you've got a couple of plat right there.

As I understand it, the richest people on Florendyl have maybe 25-30 gold, and those are mostly the ones that skipped the content to reach the endgame. Even so, it seems that most people have no trouble getting tier 2 horses, iron harvesters, 16 slot bags, rare weapons and armor, etc. This game is supposed to be around for a while, and if that is the case, gold needs to be hard to come by right now. I think it's a bit too easy to get, personally. Now level 21, I've spent 5g in the past week, and still have 2g on me. At this rate, I'll have to deal in plat next month, so I rather hope it slows down.

Well if Sigil does a good job of balancing things, when you get to the level that gold comes easier, things should start costing you plat. Once you get beyond a couple plat, your in the end game worrying about raiding, and getting the super rare stuff your only going to get if you win the random on a raid drop.
