Item Levels

When I'm below an item's "level", what do I experience? Is it decreased effectiveness overall? It's not in the manual and it's something I've never figured out during beta.

Reason I ask is because I had a "rusty greataxe" that did 6.xxDPS, and bought a Verdent Lurker Greatspear yesterday that did 12.xxDPS, but it seems to me that I'm doing the same amount of damage/hit as I did with the axe.

The only affect it should be having is to take a larger chunk of your expertise.

What is the speed on the two weapons? If the axe is alot faster, it might look like you're doing the same damage as before - but you're hitting more often.

Yes, that is how it works. The items dont lose effectiveness, but if you use all your expertise, then you won't be able to equip more items. There is a limit on how much expertise can be used by one item, I don't remember what it is though, maybe 15 or 20 percent.

Re: Item Levels

I find this confusing. I have a bow that says level 19, which works fine. I bought some arrows that said 15, and couldn't use them until I hit 15.

This is one of several things for which I've not seen a written explanation.

I hope eventually the wiki will answer such things, but for the moment they are deep dark mysteries.

Actually, about the only criticism of VG going live I've seen that I agree with is that the docs suck... IMO at least.

Re: Item Levels

Some items, mostly consumable stuff (arrows, potions), have a level required to use them. I think it actually says "level required", where armor and weapons just says "Item level".

We do have a discussion of expertise and item level; however, we left out required level: http://www.vanguardspheres.com/wiki/Items

Re: Item Levels

I think a lot of what was confusing me was the max per item stat. I hadn't seen that mentioned anywhere, and couldn't figure out how it worked.

I tried equiping an item that showed less % needed than I had available, and it didn't work... must have hit the max item %.

Makes sense now.

Trouble is balancing reading stuff and playing!

Nah... just play and read when the game is down lol

The level 15 arrows also require archery skill of 150...that is why you couldnt use them.

The limit is 20%. You can't equip. anything higher, and as you level and get closer to the level of the item it requires less expertise. It's an interesting system really. Makes it so if you find a really nice item that is higher lvl then you, you can still equip. and use it as long as it doesn't take you over 100% expertise (total of all your gear).

Also great for those that hate twinks (thinking mostly PvP people) as people can't fully deck out in higher gear as they won't have enough expertise for it all.
