Surnames At Creation A Must?

Name and Surname Changes:

Names will not be changed unless they violate this naming policy or have met one of the following criteria for a surname change:
• Getting married or divorced.

Thats what it says in the naming policy.

Just curious if anyone knows if you have to pick a surname at character creation in order to have one?
Or can you wait till you decide on one and add it in at a later time?

In eq1 you could not surname yourself until level 20.
Witch gave you plenty of time to really decide what surname was right for you.
That is IF you had not already had a Surname in mind at creation.

As we are just about 36 hours from character creation ... Any information on this topic would certainly be appreciated.

Nope, surname is optional. It's an additional field next to First Name in character creation

Yes, that is the question that I was asking.

As far as I know if you *don't* pick one at creation you don't currently get the option to pick one later. That may not always be the case, since many people have been burned by this - given that many other games make you wait to choose a surname, a lot of people assume they'll be given the chance if they don't do it at creation.

I expect we'll see options to add or change a surname, but I don't think they're available now. So if you want one, make sure you give yourself one when you're creating the char.

I find this idea of surname change by marriage or divorce quite cool. I'm wondering how the wedding ceremonies will be...

I would expect that you could alter or add the surname later in the game as well, if you have the option change it by marriage and divorce.....

So basically if you want to add a surname you have your buddy make a lvl 1 character with the surname you want and then petition to get married and assume there name. Easy! If your a guy then make another guy toon and claim it as gay marrage

Do you think that gay marriages are allowed in VG? Maybe it will require a referendum...

Haha, you could always make a female character and make some kind of lore to say it's family tradition for them to take on the female's last name instead of the male's.
