Ninja Looting

I just found out what this is and i cant for the life of me understand it. Im hoping one of u guys can explain it to me. PLEASE !!! lol

ok, here is the situation.

The group options to distribute the loot was set at lotto. this was set by the group leader and is unchangable by anyone else.

Lotto is where everyone rolls and whoever wins the roll gets the item. Of course to roll in the first place u have to click accept. If you click refuse then u are not included in the roll for the item.

I think everyone knows that and It seems to me to be a fair and equitable way to divide the spoils from each and every mob killed.

Someone then utters the magical words "Need before greed".

Apparently just uttering those words emprisons everyone within earshot into giving up and and all rights to any of the loot they want and must follow the rules laid down by the individuals uttering the magical words.

The game system which distributes the loot (LOTTO) is no longer in effect even though the group leader has not changed the options. This is a player created rule.

my only question is this: How is this fair?

If the people uttering those words would set the group options to leader only i would not have a problem with it, but just uttering those words do not change the fact that the game system chosen by the group leader is lotto and therefore everyone has a fair and equitable right to each and every item.

ok, second question: Anyone disagree, and if so why??

Re: Ninja Looting

It is something a new member of a group will have to ask and decide if he/she will accept the rules.

Some groups would lotto every thing unless there is an upgraded item and all the people that does not need that upgrade or cannot use would then hit decline and those who could use it would hit accept and thus it would lotto between those who need it.

I cannot give an agreement or a disagreement, because it really is my responsibility to found out what the loot rule is and if they change halfway through the night to a rule that I do not like, then it is up to me to decide if I would like to suck up and stick with them or try to talk to them and leave if that does not resolve it.

Bottom line is that I don’t really see “fair” or “not fair” as different people have different ideas of what is fair and what is not fair.

Re: Ninja Looting

Need before greed, bah... There's no such thing as "need" in an MMO. No one will starve because they didn't get the blessed blade of cheese cutting. If something drops, everyone has a right to it. It's only yours if you win it. If you want to work something out with your fellow players that's between you and them. I'd happily give up an item I can't use or don't really want to somebody that does. I don't expect others to.

I think it's a hypothetical situation.

Need before Greed = Huge Upgrade before No/Little upgrade. Someone said " If something drops, everyone has a right to it". Sure, everyone has a right to it but if it only benefits you by a minimul to no stat gain or you want it cause it looks cool, that is no reason to take it over someone that is using a 5-10 lvl old item.

I guess need before greed is simply who can benefit from the item the absolute most. That's the way I look at it atleast. If I have a weapon on par with the weapon that dropped and my buddy is hitting the dragon with a stick then I'll pass and let him have it. Unfortunately that's not how everyone thinks.

Thats why as a rule in most groups instead of saying NEED you must send a link to the current item you have. If its for an alt I consider that a grees roll.

Who ever gets the most out of the item wins. If its a toss up its rolled on.

If someone has already gotten something REALLY nice they may be excluded on some rolls. But the rest would just be Greed rolls.

At least this is how I tried to run my groups back in the day. I even liked spitling coin in EQ thos some always asked to turn it off. bahh I never cared. Unless there was a monk present. Then I would turn it off.

IMHO there is two ways to do this.

Number one is definately the one you just wrote, especially with bigger groups or when something really nice drops.

Number two is to only group with people you know and trust. We've gathered together four people (still working on two more to get a full group ) that know each other well in real life and trust each other to do the best for the group. This is probably the ultimate way of solving it as it creates the least issues inbetween the players. Add ventrilo, teamspeak or similar on top of this and the loot deciding goes really quick.

Re: Ninja Looting

Hypothetical situation. There's an item I want, and it's not what the majority think I "need". I've run the dungeon 30 times, have everything I'm "allowed" to roll on, and the people I used to run it with are long gone. My real life friends do not play MMOs, my in-game friends are rarely on together all at once.

In that situation I will ninja the item and feel justified.
