so, the worl isn't small after all!

in the interview with ablegamers as published today, todd mesten says:
Quote:
We build the game world in 2000 x 2000 kilometer blocks that we call ‘chunks’. We have somewhere in the realm of 200+ chunks currently in the game now, with expansion ideas for hundreds more already planned out.
oh my god!

I can't believe that's true. 4 chunks would be the size of the United States. I'm sure he misspoke (or they had a typo).

edit: And I had to laugh about his last line.

probably, yeah. remove a few zeros here and there, though, and the world will still be immense.

They misspelled Masten too

Hah, I like his little plug at the end: "I hear the music is pretty good too. =)"

Re: so, the worl isn't small after all!

Im hoping they meant Meters instead of Kilometers other wise this world is Hu.hu.hu.HUGE. Then again thats not a bad thing. How long did the run from Qeynos to Freeport take? Now How long would it take to run from San Diego to Times Square?

2000 square Kilometer dose seem rather large. If they would have said they had 50 chunks I might have bought it.

Re: so, the worl isn't small after all!

I think it would be more like 2000 x 2000 meter blocks.

That would still make the world quite big compared to many current mmorpg's.

Brad and Jeff are both on record as saying chunks are 2 x 2 kilometers.

Re: so, the worl isn't small after all!

Cool Thanks. Piro. Other wise it would be what aprox 400 mil miles?

So right now 2 x 2k is 4 kilometers 4 chunks x 200 is 800 chunks * 1.6

800 square kilometers or 1280 square miles. Now thats not huge by any means. Thats probbaly the entire world so far. Including land mass and seas/oceans. I don't think its just one contenant as Brad has said it takes him 30 minutes real time to travel from one coast to the other. Now I am sure thats mounted and all but thats not too huge. Iread somewhere that the main contenant is rufly the size of Irleand. So 2 x 2kilo. Does seem more like it.

Thanks for the clarification Piro. It was driving me nuts. I was trying to figure out where all that would fit other wise. Even having some of it going up into the sky about 4 miles and probbaly down into the ground 2 miles or so the numbers were not adding up.

Re: so, the worl isn't small after all!

Behold Qalia, the Seas of Mists, and "chunks". See that pinched bit at the north mouth of the river? Behind it is a round bulge on the river. That's Khal, the round city with the big statues overlooked by huge cliffs. Take a look at screenshots of that area and you see how damn big this game is. Those dots are the statues I think.
