Re: Your View on Leveling vs Skill Gaining
Of course there is. And who says you give the kid EVERY thing. That would be spoiling it. Maybe the old toon has pretty good skills in crafting aand you want to keep it as a crafting mule or even a crafting main. This goes for diplomacy as well.
My EQ toons are still in sonys data banks. I didn't sell them, Or give away any of there gear. Why? I may go back and tinker around with them. These are just a few reasons. Rao

The grind is so not my thing. Doing quests solo or in groups is so much more enjoyable than just killing randomly. Grinding made me leave swg and i liked that game. Grinding to gain a title or skill level is just barely accepable, always takes me forever to get it though, so thats not a way to go... On the other hand, just having skill levels that you can attain that are separate from just leveling are very interesting and anticipated. |

Re: Your View on Leveling vs Skill Gaining
Personally, what kept me driven in EverQuest was the AA (alternate advancement) system, that allowed me to continue killing for exp though being at max level, but channeling that exp into skills that further developed my character.
I'd like to see something simliar in VanGuard, however they wish to do it. I just think what's killing WoW is not enough character development, no way beyond gear to improve your character. Why play when you care little about your characters? Or, have something like "Achievement Points", where after hitting max level, you can gain points from completing difficult quests, or killing key monsters in raids. You can then turn around and spend these points to raise your HP, run faster, allow you to never run out of arrows, etc. This way, you wouldn't have to "grind" points to gain them, simply figure out quests you put aside, or have an option to repeat your favorite quest you did last week by helping others complete them again. (which would promote grouping, a key aim of Vanguard) Well brainstorming aside, I hope as I am sure you all do, that the developers played enough MMO's to avoid the downfalls, and capture what excites us the most about them. Re: Your View on Leveling vs Skill Gaining
I don't like APs. I am irritated by the lack of realism - being able to max out something like 'riding' skill without even touching a horse, simply because you did some quests for someone.
Personally (if I was making a game), I'd like a more indepth version of Dungeon Siege crosses with Oblivion. That is, you would not choose your class to begin with, and would level up skills by practising with them. Your class would be determined by your skills. That's the DS part. The Oblivion part would be that different levels of skills would give better effects. Such as being 100 in acrobatics allowing you to jump on the surface of water. I would not take the Oblivion root of making 10 skill increases give you a level increase - stats would increase with their skills (str for weapon skills, int for casting etc) like in DS. I feel that the 'smaller carrots, more often' is the way to go with skills (no shining light from the heaven and noisy sound effect for dinging - just lots of skill ups), and 'big carrots, less often' is the direction for lewtz (finally getting that awesome cuirass, and keeping it for months before upgrading!).
