So, what of the oceans?
On the vanguard official I started a topic about what will happen when you sail "too far" out? Alot of support for a round world was said, ie when you sail too far south you're automatically far north again.
Me, I was thinking, seince this is a medievalish game, perhaps we should play the medieval mindset? If you sail too far out, the ship gives you a message saying the crew or whatever dosn't want to sail further for fear of "falling off the world" and it causes you to turn back automatically. What do you all think this should be like?

Re: So, what of the oceans?
Well....we have to define "medival" first. Is it an advanced sociaty on other aspects? It's a different world, to begin with, so what do we know of it, after all? Is it, indeed, round? Is the atmosphere as ours is or was?
Many variables here, so I'm saying let your mind dictate more how you would perceive it, rather than anything else, until we can read lore that explains it.

Re: So, what of the oceans?
I understand what you mean by medieval mindset as most of those people back in those days thought the world was flat and would actually fall off at the edge, still I would prefer the endless sea approach as I would like to have control of my ship rather than have it artificially turned around.

Re: So, what of the oceans?
I want real fantasy!!! Let the world be flat. Have an edge to the world and turn it into a massive adventure zone. Read a fantasy series once set entirely on bottomless, near vertical cliff face so my suggestion is not outside the realm of true fantasy. I would love Sigil to introduce some Pratchet like imagination into the game.

Re: So, what of the oceans?
wierd that i was watching a documentary on a similar topic the other night.
apparently the greeks knew the world was round, the romans knew the world was round, and christopher columbus thought the world was pear shaped :P unfortunatly i was raiding while it was on, so missed who actually thought the world was flat. Anyway, i'd just like to see higher waves, rumours of sea monsters (boat raid?), dense fog + malfunctioning compas. there are a few things they can go with for sailing too far, and i'd like to think its not all going to be a foced hand moving you further back in the right direction. if players dont heed warnings, let them loose their ship. |

Re: So, what of the oceans?
Well my main purpose for making you turn about was so that later, in other expantions, you could add new landmass without them randomly appearing; like you see a faint trace of a shaddow on the horizon.

Re: So, what of the oceans?
i think the world should be round, it just makes more sense to me than stuff like what tribes does (can go on forever in one direction and never hit anything and just keep going with randomly generated terrain...) or anything of that sort.

, part of it seems oddly familiar, lol |

Re: So, what of the oceans?
If the world is round you would have a curved horizon and unless the game world is a thousand time bigger than any game world to date that curve would be very noticable. you could disappear from one eastern edge of the map then appear on the western edge but that makes adding new lands difficult.
Guess we will have either invisable barriers or never ending foggy limbo at the edges boring but tried and tested techniques. |
