Old console RPGs had world maps where you would wrap to the other side of the map when you crossed the edge. For that to work in 3D the world has to be donut shaped.

In EQ, the Guides and GMs had the rule that, if they couldn't see land from where your corpse was, they'd summon it to the nearest land area you could get to.
I don't think it's going to be too terrible. I still miss those strange CR moments in history!! And the nice, cooperative players who could /summon your corpse without an attitude or expecting you to pay a fortune! The sense of community was really nice! Hoping for a reinactment.

When you die at sea you return to your bind point, your corpse floats waiting your return. It is at this point you hope that there will be some sort of indicator pointing out the way to your corpse floating in a featureless ocean.
