Naming your characters
Where do you guys (and gals) get the names for your characters?
I used to game under the handle 'fromage' (cheese in French). Long story short, I ended up in a competitive clan with a lot of Russian people in it. Instead of calling me fromage, they shortened it to froma and the name has stuck with me ever since. The character that I name Froma is almost always my main toon. I also use the names Bilfin and Thailin for my alts: a Halfling Rogue and Dwarf Priest, respectively. They were both inspired by Tolkien's The Hobbit.

Re: Naming your characters
Greymain is a distortion of Gray Main meaning gray hair and beard. It is also a play on my real name and indicates it is my main character. I also have a favorite Alt called Mazy Stormcrow named from a character out of baldurs gate and an insulting term used by wormtongue in Lord of the Rings. To me it sums up a slightly crazy adventurer with attitude and if Sigil dont block it will be the name of my halfelven Druid.

Re: Naming your characters
Talliaroon (Night Elf Druid) is a name from the WoW random name generator that I modified slightly.
Tall (Night Elf Rogue) is kind of obvious. He was made to be my alt, but ended up being my main. Jaeth (Night Elf Warrior, future Rogue of some kind?) is an anagram, the origin of which I'd rather not comment on. Haha. |

Re: Naming your characters
I always look through my forgotten realms and dragonlance (etc...) books and try to come up with a variation or if inspriation hits a new name from those volumes. I try to keep to the racial and cultural ideas that come through for all the names i come up with.
Of course i use my d&d character names as well - they have become as familiar to me as my own name lol. the name i post here and currently play with is for a dwarven crafter - weaponsmith - so thats why i chose anvil as part of my name. |

Re: Naming your characters
I kinda made up my names in EQ with the help of the generator, and got kinda attached, so use the Elven or Halfling or Drow translator to change them around now! I won't be using my EQ names in VSoH. It's a different world!

Re: Naming your characters
I made Fooee OnYooee when I was making a Wookie in SWG, liked it so much have stuck with it since. I usually use Dirkus Pitticus based on a character in Clive Cussler's novels. Have used quite a few names over since my EQ days, way to many to list.

Re: Naming your characters
Kjallak Kjakkalr: Googled "Viking names" and there it was. All homekeys too. The last name is just a play on the first. Most people just called me Jallaky.
Dixei Njordmus: From that Austin Powers movie, with a norse twist. Not proud of this one. ;_; Treesus: He was a tree-man and a healer. Every time I grouped it'd be a good 20-30 minutes before somebody "got it" and made a fuss. Mistigris: Googled "cool words". It's a French variant of Poker and also the name of the Joker in that game. It's also become a common name for pet cats in French speaking places. And it looks like "Miss Tigris". Perfect for the Mithra cat-girl I made with no clear idea what Job to pursue. Supermule, Dreadcelery: Galka adopted an "Adjective-Noun" name scheme after taking refuge in Bastok. Presumably because Humes can't pronounce complicated names like "Raogrimm", "Zeid", or "Gumbah". These were mules, storage and trading characters. Supermule is obvious, but Dreadcelery actually came out of the name generator. Prettierboy: Taru. My friend's Hume character was named "Prettyboy". He'd use Convert to suicide at linkshell meetings and I'd dance on his corpse in a subligar. Anbu: Customized my Orc hunter but couldn't think of a name... ALT+TAB. What's on my desktop... a Naruto fansub by ANBU. On that show, one job of ANBU is to hunt rogue ninja. I wanted to play a hunter, which has anti-stealth abilities. Hmmm. Desperation: That's pretty much what I felt when I rolled this elf druid. Friends dissapearing without a word, servers offline when I want to play and full of gank zergs when they're up, RL a mess. After a few days I got a /tell saying "Welcome to the stupid name list." From a guy named Cobalt. Yeah, emotion is a much worse namesake than radioactive metal. Erm... oops.

Re: Naming your characters
I was lazy, random generated from EQ and just kinda kept it. It's vague so it usually fits in any setting, LOL.

Re: Naming your characters
Siencyn Cyfaill
Welsh: Siencyn= "God is Gracious" Cyfaill= Friend (my last name happens to be Friend as well) Both mean alot to me, and although I have had other names during my gaming career, this one means the most to me.
