WARNING: Gravity Games

I know a lot of folks are looking for games to pass the time, but ya might take a sec and read this from the StarGate forums. I just showed it to my other half (the security d00d), and he's like... !!

Here's the link: http://forums.stargateworlds.com/showthread.php?t=18944

Here's the post:

User beware Requiem Bloodymare from Gravity Games.

If you played the Open Beta Requiem Bloodymare you might want to take a close look at your system. Look as Administrator under Computer Management / Local Users / Users and see if you find what I found on my system.

I would like to know were in the user agreement I gave permission for this game to create a user account on my system. (HsUser_iyd5Sa7CdNK / Properties = HackShield Shadow User) I did not read anything in the user agreement that gave you permission to do this!! And even if it is somewere in the fine print you should have made very big warnings and very clearly stated the this “User Account” would be created on my system and, I gave you clear permission to install this specific type of account. Not just permission to install the game.

What really bugs me is I would not have known about this if I was not an active administrator of my computer. If you just click the dummy button for users this account does not appear. If your like me and routinely poke around in the administrator functions, and look under Computer management /Local Users and Group/Users it is right there with the other system accounts like it is some vital and necessary system tool. It has no description as to what the F*$% it is. So I have to spend hours resurfacing what this new “User” account on my system is, and basically take a high security risk stance until I can determine what / whom this “User” on my system is.

Needles to say I am very upset about this. I do not trust Requiem Bloodmare, Gravity Games or any game that come from this company. And even if it is in that fine print, it does not matter because Gravity did not take the responsibility to make it very very clear what was being installed. If Gravity need a program to prevent hackers thats fine and I understand the need to stop cheaters, but creating a hidden user on someones system with out making it very very clear is dishonest, sneaky, and not better then the hackers Gravity is supposedly trying to prevent.

Now I have to decide if I need to strip my entire system down and reformat it.

I am amazed when I search Google, Ask, Yahoo, Micro Soft, and so on. I find very little information about this. It was on a gaming forums (Vault Network) that I finally found a mention of this issue. I doubt many people are, so if you find on your system what I found on mine spread the word, there is something just not right about a company that sneaks a user account onto a persons system.
So, in case you were thinking of downloading it.......

Re: WARNING: Gravity Games

Creates a new user account huh? Well that's new. Most people have accepted programs like gameguard and Blizzard's own warden client as necessary evils in the online gaming world. However the games that use those programs have entire paragraphs about these programs in their respective EULAs and none of them go so far as creating an entire new user account on your computer.

Reading the thread you linked and the ones linked in that thread it seems that it wasn't the game developer that was at fault but likely the location he downloaded it from as there are several. If it wasn't in any the EULAs for the game, the download, or the hacking prevention software then he has grounds for a lawsuit and should take up that action. If it is an EULA somewhere then he has no one to blame but himself for not reading the most likely overtly long, boring and tedious EULA. Nobody likes to read EULAs but doing so is a necessary evil.

This is yet another reminder why I love my gaming consoles.
