Database connectivity issues
Hi all,
Some of you may have noticed that the forums and blogs have been going down almost daily for brief periods (5-10 minutes). I've been in contact with my hosting company about this and finally got an answer that I'm willing to accept. It seems that the sql server I'm on is shared with some retailers who are stressing it with the holiday shopping rush. The databases are going to be moved to a new SQL server which should resolve the problem. They are going to attempt to update the configuration files when they do the migration, but if that doesn't go smoothly I'll have to manually update everything to point to the new server. This will take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours depending on if I'm at computer when they do it. So... if the automatic configuration update doesn't work, the forums and blogs might be down for a few hours. Other than the possible downtime, I don't anticipate any problems with the migration to the new server. Everything is backed up daily (by my provider and manually by me) and until the migration is complete, I'm going to be backing up the forum database every 6 hours or so... so even if the move gets completely fubared, we shouldn't lose more than a few posts. I apologize for the problems over the past couple days. Better to get it out of the way now then when we get busy near release... but it still shouldn't happen. Thanks for your understanding. |

They must have understood how unhappy I was. The migration is already complete.
Please let me know if there are any performance issues. I check pretty frequently, but I can easily miss it if the database server is not responding for brief periods during the day. I want to provide the best possible experience, and seeing a "cannot connect to database" error isn't exactly what I consider a satisfactory experience ![]() |
