Psionicist

Here's what we currently know about the Psionicist from an interview of Zack Karlsson on Gamespy.

The big reason to choose Qalia as opposed to Thestra, though, has to do with the existence of the Psionicist. While the Psionicist isn't exclusive to Qalia, it will not be available to players starting in Thestra. According to Sigil, the primary jobs of a psionicist is damage-dealing through the use of psionic powers as well as augment his allies' survivability by increasing their awareness during combat and covering them with diamond-like skin (in other words, nuking and DPS with minor buffing). The most interesting element of the psionicist, though, is how he or she advances. As the psionicist evolves, speaking with a trainer to gain new skills is not always the pathway to more power. Objects called "gestalts" serve as guideposts to unlocking new aspects of their powers. The very evolution of the class, then, is dependent upon which areas of the world they choose to visit. It's not difficult to imagine, then, psionicist versions of "vision quests", enlightened journeys, or, conversely, taboo areas where they are unable to go. Sigil has built the idea of travel into the very structure of the class.

I love the idea.

My only reservation however is that no matter how innovative an approach to class developpement and lvl progression is, it only remains while the game is new. As the game matures, patterns emerge, spoilers are made available and soon enough, the once novel idea becomes just another recipe among a long list of how to reach max lvl in no time.

Kudos to Sigil for coming up with outstanding new ideas like the Psionicist or vision quests, however, what would really blow my mind would be a truely dynamic progression/developpement where just because 1 path worked for person X does not mean it would work for person Y.

Can't wait to hear more about the game!

I love psionics. This would be the first fantasy MMORPG game that I've played that included them. I will definately give them a try.

I'm very intrigued by this class. The different path to advancement is very interesting.

Could this be solved by randomizing the locations somewhat? Well actually it will probably never be solved as there will always be someone wanting the quick easy way out and in some ways thats another way to play games - solving the puzzle of how to beat the mechanics. Just not how I like to play MMORPGs.

I think randomizing....to a point, could be useful in fixing the problem of spoilers. I wouldnt want to have a gestalt I needed to visit as a Psionic on a completely different continent than my fellow Psionic's was though. This is even more the case given how difficult travel is expected to be in Vanguard.

I agree on not having it move across continents and from something I read recently about continent size it should probably be restricted to region randomness. Sounds like the world is going to be bigger than anything I've ever played.

A poll at the official site has the psionist in the lead (for the caster class most interested in). Not surprising, Necromancer is second. I wonder how many Psionist we'll see running around on the first day.

I admire sigil's relentless efforts to ensure every aspect of their game is unique in some way. The leveling system for the Psyconist sounds amazing and I personally can't wait to try one (even though my first char will be a warrior). To ensure advancement stays somewhat fresh for a long time, I think the routes should vary (random path generation?), so that it's never guaranteed to be the same experience.

I'd love a mechanic that could make each persons experience unique or at least somewhat different than most others. Im really hoping the perception system is the answer to this. Welcome to the boards Legends.
