How motorways work

http://www.howmotorwayswork.co.uk/

Read. Digest. I agree and rant about everything on that site, especially foglights! OH MY GOD! How many drivers see a wisp of fog, despite visibility out to 300m and immediately turn their fog lights on, dazzling everyone around them? GAH! We need some form of car-to-car direct communication system so we can contact them and scream "TURN YOUR DAMN FOGS OFF!". Sometimes you forget to turn your fogs off, that's fine - it's the idiots you see turn them on when there is patently no need that gets to me.

GRRRRR. Don't get me started on the morons who slow down to below the speed limit when they see the police! Hello imbicile, they can't pull you for doing the speed limit! We're not talking "police at the scene of an accident" here either, we're talking "police pootling along in the inside lane on their way from point-to-point". Your slowing down to 50mph causes a phantom traffic jam, well done!

Oh man, I guess Brits have the same issues with driving we Yanks have!! I have a theory and one day I hope to figure out the math involved, but I whole-heartedly believe that as inclement weather is on the rise...or as the barometer falls, so too the IQ level of the average driver follows suit. It never fails that the harder it rains, the faster people go....or the slicker it gets, the more people take idiot chances.

I am not sure what the British equivalent is, but here in Texas...and the south in general...we have a special breed of human called the Redneck. Now, I am about to flame some people, so be warned...
I come from a long line of Texas Rednecks, so I have a special insight into the mind (or lack thereof) of these gems of mankind.
Now, a Redneck usually has a TRUCK...and that TRUCK has BIG WHEELS. Remember, you can't have BIG WHEELS unless you have clearance...so the truck is jacked up...or...on a lift kit which raises the frame and/or body of the vehicle anywhere from 2" to 48", depending on how much corn liquor you ran across the county line.

Okay...so your TRUCK with the BIG WHEELS has two purposes....going to the store for BEER and HUNTING. Now, we are talking about rednecks, so beer and hunting are NOT mutually exclusive.

Sometimes you have to go get BEER or go HUNTING in bad weather...so you need LIGHTS...LOTS AND LOTS OF LIGHTS.
Rednecks have a propensity for the placement of lights on their vehicles in a manner that is contradictory to proper operation of said vehicle or other vehicles...

So here I am, an escapee from redneck land, tooling down the road in my Jeep, minding my own business, when out of nowhere, I get exposed to an illumination factor that results in s sunburn...ala Close Encounters of the Third Kind!!

The redneck has placed so many LIGHTS on the front end of his TRUCK, that he needs a seperate Nuclear Power Plant in order to keep his Wattage goin at 80 mph.

Meanwhile, my retinas have ben burned out and I am losing control of my jeep because I resemble a victim from The Birds and the Redneck is busy burning out the surrounding grass and trees that line the road...all the while chugging his 72 OUnce 7-11 mug full of Pabst Blue Ribbon (nasty beer).

So yeah, those lights suck.

I hate driving at night and seeing those big SUV's or Trucks who don't even need to put on their brights because they have a light rack on top of their truck, and they have 4 large main lights at the front. Its WAY too much lighting and when you get one that happens to have their brights on it just gets insane.

Ah yes, the joys of "Full Beam" headlights - it's OK on an unlit road as long as there is no oncoming traffic. I do this, and always dip them when there is a car coming in the other direction.

Once (thankfully only once) an oncoming car didn't dip his lights, I couldn't see the road. Pretty scary at 70mph in a lane about as wide as my car in the middle of nowhere...

I would understand having those light attachments in the middle of the safari or desert where there are hardly any people. But in civilized America where everyone has a car and you will most likely see another driver on the road at some point should justify the fact that you really don't need lights like that.

Well I gess I shouldn't respond to this. But what the he**. hehehe

It just so happens I am one of those rednecks you guys are complaining about. I am sorry you have had some bad experiences with the particular class of idiot rednecks. That are using those lights while on a main rod or highway.

They should know they are illigal to use in that mannor, and can be ticketed rather heavily for it.

As for me I run my headlights on low all the time when I am on a street or highway. I keep my offroad lights covered with there light covers. That came with them. So if your ever in Kentucky and see a Big Green Bronco It might be me.

So just smile and wave. I will do my best to keep from running you over or blinding you with my headlights.
