I remember when I first started playing EQ1 I used to get all kinds of flak from people about it. The funny thing is that before I started playing I was drinking (underage) a lot, getting into fights, doing a lot of stupid things... you know, being a teenager. After I got hooked into EQ1 I stopped doing all those things. I spent most of my time either playing or reading and posting on forums about it. All in all it might have saved me from a jail sentence and a dishonorable discharge from the Navy.
Now when some one gives me flak about it, I always ask them "What do you do in your free time? Drink? Watch TV? Beat your wife? Well... I play video games, and my form of entertainment is cheaper, and doesn't kill my liver in the process. The .gif in my signature should indicate how I feel about how the government is approaching video games. I get so sick of hearing about how movies, music or games are responsible for murders and violence. Fact is, parents are responsible, no matter how you slice it. If your kids are so weak minded that playing GTA causes them to go kill people than their parents should be held responsible for letting them play... or at the very least for not educating them about how life really works. Funny thing is, there is a ton more violence on TV and in movies, but we don't hear people crying about how Saw II caused their kids to become twisted serial killers. Let a pixelated character pick up a gun, and anarchy is bound to ensue!

wooh rant time!
ok. i say this to my beloved father many times a year. when i buy a new game he says "that's a waste of money." or he says "why don't you go out with your friends instead of sitting infront of that bloody computer." i reply with a polite. "ok, sure thing dad. would you rather i went out drinking. doing drugs like my older brother did. failing my AS's. get a girl pregnant at 16? would you like that father?" my dad then walks off. it's exactly the thing to say to anti-gamers. "who is more likely to mug or kill a person. a guy who spends most of the day on the computer. or a drug addicted drunkard on the streets all night." it's simple logic! |
