Holy Swords

I've been thinking about paladins and holy swords. Throughout legend no paladin was complete without his holy sword by his side defending the helpless and smiting evil. So following that idea, how do you think holy swords should be handled in Vanguard?

Here are several of the ideas I had:

1. Holy Swords are available to the paladin by means of a quest starting about mid level. As the paladin advances in level other quests open up allowing him to upgrade his sword. So the paladin only ever has 1 Holy Sword during his lifetime. Although the power of that sword can and does change.

2. Holy Swords are available to the paladin by means of a quest starting at different levels. Each quest yields a sword of the appropriate level based on the quest. So a paladin could choose to quest for his level 30 holy sword, skip his 40 one, and still get his level 50 one for example.

3. Holy Swords are treated as epic weapons and are only attainable by the highest level paladins and would most likely require a raid to attain.

These are just a few of the ideas I have been kicking around. What do you think?

EQ2 had some good ideas in this respect with the Ghoulbane quests - you first found, then restored Ghoulbane. The trouble was that the sword was available for all classes who could wield a sword when really it aught to have been Paladin only (dating back to EQ1).

As long as this sort of unique weapon quest exists for all classes I am all for it You're right though, a Paladin needs the archetypal "holy sword of shining light".

Hmm... Holy swords you say. But what is a holy sword? What is the difrent btwean a holy sword and a magic sword?

Well the only difrens i can think of is the cration of the sword. A magic sword might me crafted as a normal sword and then get an enchant, but I think the most known ways (well in the aspect of fantasy) is that the magic is crafted into the sword at creation. It might be in form of rune magic, enchantnted components or alchemy. The creater of a magic sword does not nessessary have a purpuse with the swords creation other then creat a superior.

Now how will a holy sword be created? Well a holy sword is most likley a normal sword that have been blessed by a priest or in some rare ocation by a god or demi-god. As the priest, god or demi-god probebly have a purpuse with blessing the sword in question to fulfil a quest of some sort.

In this aspect I think it's more logical to see a holy sword as a sword that have been enchannted (buffed). But as a paladin is a holy warrior he will probebly have a holy quest to fulfil, right? Buy doing difrent quests for his/her order the paladin can obtain difrent blessings on his weapon. But I don't see the nessessarity in limit this to only one sword. Or that he will not be able to get a magic sword plessed.

The blessing in questions can be that it can warn for difrent situations, as for an example the blessing of rightusnes will make his wielder awear of dark magic is used against him. In game terms give the wielder will reseve + 1% to resist shadow magic. Or it can maby be somthing in line with blessing of holines that will give the sword +5% damage to undead. And the blessings in question could only be tempurary.

It would be interesting to see weapons glow to warn of danger, a la Sting in The Hobbit / Lord of the Rings.

I would like to see the "Holy Sword" as blessed by a God that the Paladin worships or has gained the favor of. Also you should be able to choose which type of bonus it gives based upon your own style of play, maybe have a list of different types or a way toi pick and choose i.e Bonus against fighting undead as well as glowing when undead or near eh?

I agree, I think it would be cool to see Holy Swords based off of what type of God you worship and to have different type's of holy swords from weapon style to different type of blessings upon the weapon.

As was said above, swords that warn of different types of dangers, undead, demons, etc.

as per the OP i would like to see option 1 or 2 . 3 IMHO is would be a mistake. it only started a casual /HC epic fight on forums.
as in option 1 or 2 a pally can slowly work on his epic as he lvl up weather his casual or HC. soloist or grouper/raider it only mean that one will get it faster than another

I bet for sure we will see some type of holy swords. More then likely there will be some sort of epic quests for each class to obtain a special weapon with revered power. This is my guess thinking back to the Kunark expansion and even EQ with the different pally quests to obtain a holy sword. I havent heard much about these types of quests, but I bet they will be in there eventually.

It would be neat to have a holy sword, but for some reason I get the idea that its going to be really overpowered or something. Or theres going to be a effect on it that like increases paladins buff strength by like 30% or something, maybe im crazy. In my opinion I think the everquest 1 epic items were great. they werent insane strong or make the class overpowered, yet it was good for the class and class specific. They could add all the awsome looking effects for a paladin there after. The quest line should be lets say for a paladin all holy type quests. Like clearing a area of skeletons thats destroying a town or something like that then go kill a raid mob. what do you think of that, I just think of a epic type quest like old eq1 would be better than a sword that only a pally can use and no other class gets anything like that you know? :?

comments or replys appreciated

Option 3. However I do think they should be somewhat unique. I would have a range of stats that can be made when the sword is "created" just so they aren't all the same. Maybe with a different weapon proc/glow effect/stats. I say option 3 because it is just lame to see every Paladin running around wielding a Soulfire (EQ Reference). It should be something sought after and high regard. If you see a Paladin with one you go wow this guys awesome, not ahh he's just got his level 30 holy sword...
