I'm ok with a Paladin being limited to one handed weapons because I always invision the class holding a shield. That being said, It would be that if we are limited in using one handed weapons then they compansate this with shield skills.
Currently in DDO I have a Paladin and I chose the skills/feats Shield Mastery , Shield Bashing and something else. So when I take a defensive stance I can deflect 99% incomming missle weapons and melee attacks. The bad part is that I can't draw aggro while in this position. |

Hello. I am new here but I have been reading alot about Vanguard and it looks awesome. I have to say I favor the Dwarven Paladin's as well with a hammer and shield as my favorite weapons. Also a giant 2-H hammer always looks nice in my opinion. Hope to see ya'll when it comes out.

Well, the choice all depends on how you want to look at "historical paladins." Certainly the original depiction of them for most people is King Aurthur, so sword and shield is correct in most people's eyes....although Aurthur never used a shield. However, real life knights were expected to be well versed in ALL weapons with one notable exception.... the dagger was generally considered a "weapon of the treacherous." Me personally, in 5+ years of EQ1, I couldn't be parted from my 2h swords, and 1h/shield.... especially if it had an appropriate name, like my trusty Redemption.

What I picture a Paladin is this
http://www.legendra.com/art/wallpape...v_wall_515.jpg Now that has a Heroic and Badass look and Im loving the weapon and Helmet. The cloak is a very nice touch I wonder if this game will have cloaks they really add more of a dramatic feeling. But that Two-hander sword is what Ill be using on my Paladin. Oh and I think only Humans and dwarves should be Paladins. High elves? please...

that is one killer paladin pic (and the game is pretty cool too so far).
quintisentially speaking, yea sword and board is pretty much the way to go. though the occasional mace derrived from thier quintisential clerical bretheran might crop up. me though, I likes me a nice big 2h mace. head bashing? np. door bashing? np. wall bashing? np. barrel bashing? you get the idea. ![]()

In my mind the Paladin is a servant of the will of his or her deity, and serves in a fashion acceptable to that deity. Having every paladin run around as the same white bread sword and board worshipper of truth, justice, and the american way is boring, uncool, and outdated. I've spoken about a green knight before and I'm not going into it deeply, but obviously a paladin serving the interests of Tunare using the methods of elves and Tunare, are going to operate quite a bit differently than the human worshippers of Marr.
If elves did use hammers they would be weighted and constructed differently than those employed by dwarves. I always wanted to serve Tunare, and shape the world in her image. In EQ I was forced to act under the banner of Marr and Nife more often than not, and to shape the world in their image. Furthermore there were paladins of Prexus, Erolissi, and Quellious. I would think the latter would be borderline enchanters with a detachment from combat. Perhaps certain gods shouldn't even have a paladin class. Why would they grant powers to a mortal who wouldn't operate within their realm? I never understood Prexus at all, and couldn't agree that he would be wholly supportive of our holy crusade. Perhaps he employs his own undead under the oceans. We never knew. Since the stereotype for Paladins is so firmly entrenched in that figure represented on HOMM V, they might as well make the class Human only. I like Paladins, but I love elves, and they don't approach problems from the same place as humans. I can agree on a distaste for craven weapons, those built exclusively to deal death, but would a god(dess) of love not have an interest in spiteful rapiers? I think it might expect its crusaders to mete out whatever justice in whatever manner it deems appropriate. Would that make you any less a paladin? Have you not faithfully served your god? A god that serves the purposes of life and the living in a very direct manner. Is compassion truly a requisite for paladins, or is this another stereotype imposed on us by christianity? Paladins should do as their gods bid them. Brell, Prexus, Mith Marr, and Tunare don't see eye to eye in the manner of execution, and the success of one's agenda might cost that of the other three. I want to wield a (double) bladed staff, a couple rapiers, or an efficient and small sword such as a katana or a leaf-bladed short sword and a round shield. I want to be a Paladin, a very well armored knight, in the service to a deity with an affinity for nature and balance and a distaste for parasites, including most of the undead. Furthermore the balance may require the death of the weak to serve the greater good. I'll probably end up wielding claymores, bastard swords, falchions and sabers, kite and tower shields, and my service will be focused around cleansing the undead in unquestionable devotion to the weak. I don't have an issue with the white knight role. I have an issue with the lack of choice. The white knight is great, and I would deplore its removal even more fervently than I request choice. |

Well since i will play a PALY, My hopes are This Anyone Rember the Soulfire? in EQ1 was the Best you could get for them,Then they Nerfed it with EPICS and made it Worthless. I hope that they dont do the same thing With Vanguard. Make something newer Yes Nerf the Sword that Took you almost a YEAR to get? and Guys that were after the Epics i dotn wanna hear How Easy they made it to get .in EQ1 before that you had to be Over level 40 to get to where the guy was in Paw to turn in the Parts,And 40 was Considered LOW as the MOBS around you were Higher than 45s. ok rant over its just i hope that IF they do have a Weapon like that it Doesnt get Nerfed,If anything it gets better cause of the new Weapons ect.

When I think of the Soulfire sword, I always associate it with the orc Obould in the "Thousand Orcs" book by R.A. Salvatore (drizzt series if you prefer).
I only use swords with my paladin, but thats an RP choice as well. If I get a rare axe or hammer, I'm trading it for a blade, and not using it.
