Elder Scrolls: Oblivion

Have you guys tried this game out yet? If not, I highly, highly recommend it. It has a few flaws but it's an incredibly amazing game. It's easily in the top 3 single player games I've ever played.

I made a couple characters, but I've mostly been playing my assassin-type one. If you do play, I very much recommend playing an assassin and joining the Dark Brotherhood (I know we're tanks at heart, but the fighter's guild storyline has nothing on the Dark Brotherhood). It is nothing short of brilliant.

I can see myself playing this until Vanguard is released. I didn't know it was possible to be so addicted to a single player game.

Stunning, simply stunning - all I can say is I hope Vanguard's outdoors are as beautiful I'm playing a custom class, Predator:

Security
Sneak
Marksman
Blade
Block
Light Armour
Illusion

I'm a Khajiit (if you hadn't guessed) and right now I'm level 8 and a footpad in the Thieves guild. I'll join the Assassin's guild at some point, I have no doubt, but I am *loving* the stealth combat! Some of the quests I have done so far have been incredible, full of twists and turns you wouldn't expect. I'm also enjoying horse thievery, general theft, pickpocketing, theft and fencing thieved things (did I mention theft?) In that regard it is a LOT harder than Morrowind, but much more rewarding as a result. Combat is a big step up from Morrowind too, the addition of manual block makes things interesting. Since I am sword+board+light armour I use my speed to out manuevre my opponants, but if it comes to it I have the once a day Khajiit fear to make them flee

The only downside is the true SM 3.0 HDR, meaning my SM 2.1 X800XTPE isn't up to it, which is a real shame because bloom just doesn't cut it.

I strongly suggest you have a trawl through the Mods forum looking for the [REL] and [RELz] threads - there are already some very impressive additions. I run with the arrow range, health regen over time and more importantly the "Khajiit Night Vision Toggle" mod (why should a cat shifting his eyes into night vision be a 30 second ability?) to name but 3

Also, Ctrl+Alt+Del sums up the occasional AI problem perfectly

EDIT: Going to have to try http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/i...owtopic=301395 later - it's a new race called the Rhajiit who are Snow Leopards

Sneak attack with a bow = goodness

I've only played it a little bit so far, but I'm loving my assassin.

Looks amazing. Looks like I have to go out and get it now that it seems I am the only one of the VGF staff that doesn't have it  .

I was a big fan of Morrowind, but it was very exploitable. Alchemists could make potions that would make the entire game trivial.

Thats a nice Albino cat you have there Lightning. Those screenies are very sharp.

Sounds like I am going to have to go steath combat as well. I'm sure that you're loving the assassin. I have quite a lot experience in the role of that class from EQ2. Can't wait to try this one out.

They fixed the balancing issues that Morrowind had. Unfortunately they fixed it a little too much in my opinion...scaled leveling sucks, but it's not too bad. You shouldn't be finding anything to make the game trivial though.

Oblivion has already produced tons of great memories in the week or so that it's been out. Here's one where I had to kill some people in a house for a quest, and I shot this guy in the back with an exploding ice arrow. He flew halfway across the room onto the top of a dresser:

Another time I had to assassinate an old lady and all of her kids. Well, I snuck up on her in her sleep, and I fed on her because I'm a vampire. I forgot to go back into sneak mode, and I attacked her without the sneak bonus, so she didn't die in one hit. She got up immediately and ran outside the house. I walked out the door and saw her bolt straight into the front of my horse, who reared up on its hind legs and gave the lady a face full of hoof, finishing the job for me.

There's so many awesome things in this game, I've never been so addicted to a single player game.

ROFL, thats awesome man!

It sounds like the quests are in line with your class. Whereas, in Morrowind, one could do quests that were the same regardless of the class you choose. A game that bends around the type of character and the choices that character makes are very very addicting.

Fable is a good example of this. That game had endless possibilities and there were countless ways of which you could make your character.

I think I'll get Oblivion tomorrow.

P.S.- BF2 is what I am currently playing and it is very addicting as one can grind every rank in the USMC to gain prestige and precedence over the commander position during each battle. I just gained a rank the other day as Sergeant Major. If you are an adrenaline junkie, get this game!

Well, it's not that quests change to fit your class, rather that he's joined the assassins guild and is doing their quests

For my part, as thief, I have had a lot of fun rescuing people from the shattered ruins of a destroyed city and pillaging their possessions the moment their backs are turned. The thieves guild quests have been very exciting so far, the last one requiring pure stealth - sneak into a crypt, steal a bust and get out without being seen. If you're seen, you WILL be arrested.

When you're arrested you can pay a fine (based on your bounty, in turn based on what you were caught doing / have done), go to jail or resist arrest. Going to jail causes one of your primary stats to decay by at least 1.

However, I've joined the Blades, so I am wielding their katana - fast with a great reach, good sword If you time it right, you can back away from a mob keeping them right on the tip of your sword's reach. If they don't have a weapon they can't hit you

Yeah...the quests don't bend around your class. In the Dark Brotherhood, you could play through the whole thing as a warrior with no stealth and just slash your way through everything, but there are bonus rewards for completing objectives in a certain way, usually involving stealth. If you don't sneak through most of the quests, you won't get those bonuses, and you'll probably get fined alot.

That's why I like to have different characters for different purposes in the game. It lets me explore different classes and different parts of the game as well. Unfortunately though, I'm finding the rest of the game outside of the Dark Brotherhood isn't nearly as interesting. I haven't tried the Thieve's Guild yet though, I heard that was pretty decent. I'll have to do that.
