Say Hello to Blu-Ray
There is a fight currently going on to bring out the next generation of high definition capable DVD drives. It appears that the current leader is now going to be Blu-Ray as Pioneer announced they have finished the technology to make a Blu-Ray drive. These drives will have the capacity to hold ...get this 25 GIGs!! That is just nuts in my book. It will make you think though. How comfortable do you feel using a little flimsy disk to hold 10 percent of your hard drive? Manufacturers are already discussing server backup technology using these disks with so much capacity. Here is a link to a short story on this new technology. Please feel free to share your thoughts.

Re: Say Hello to Blu-Ray
Pioneer is already too late to market. While they were squabbling about standards with the rest of the industry, a small company hooked up with Maxell and Hitachi and put the Blu-Ray spec to shame. Expect Blu-Ray and HD-DVD to go the way of Betamax.

Re: Say Hello to Blu-Ray
I pretty much thought blue ray would be the way to go once sony announced there support of it for ps3(which I think was about a year ago). Maybe you can hate $ony or just the playstation line, but there is no way you can argue with their success they know what they are doing period.

Re: Say Hello to Blu-Ray
I saw that Holo CD sometime ago but the problem with that technology is only honestly that it is not backed by the large companies who would need to use it in order for it to be successful. If Sony, MS, and the other large manufacturers dont hop on the bandwagon then its just something cool thats out there. It is obviously a better technology. No one has mentioned anything about cost though which may also be a limiting factor. I honestly think blu ray is going to happen only because of the power in the companies behind it. However 1T sized disks would be sweet

Re: Say Hello to Blu-Ray
Don't forget "supported" and stuff. If companies aren't going to support the technology, it's dead before it gets out. It's a very fickle industry!

Re: Say Hello to Blu-Ray
Hehe very true ... the problem is in this industry then word "standards" is a dirty word. Support is a form of blackmail!!
Many years ago I was responsible for replacing the computer system for a large company. While researching various solutions one manufacturer informed me proudly that they were the only company in the world to support "standard" Unix. Needless to say on closer investigation I found that only software produced by this company ran under this "standard" version!!! My old dad had an expression - 40.000 men marched past an my dad was the only one in step! |

Re: Say Hello to Blu-Ray
It can hold a lot more than that. This article implies that it is 25 gig PER LAYER.

Re: Say Hello to Blu-Ray
Ive been following the HD vs blu-ray for sometime and man it is interesting. I don't think the holographic disks will be able to catch on for quite some time after this war finishes.
I do think blu-ray will win in the long run because of the ps3, however it looks like Microsoft is going to make it very difficult for them by rallying support around the HD-DVD |
