Solid state hard drives a fix for hitching

This game must have lots of data, I see these new RAM drives on the market that are completely solid state. Meaning the access speed to them will be light years faster than hard drives, that way your computer doesn't have to wait for you hard drive to seek, find the file then read it etc. But so far I have only been able to find a 32GB one and they are very expensive around $900, but I bet that hitching would stop, as long as the rest of your system was up to far.

These is even way faster than Raid 0 with raptor drives.

The SSD reads 300 percent faster (53MB/s) and writes 150 percent quicker (28MB/s) than normal hard drives. As a result, multiple application programs can operate simultaneously and large volumes of data can be edited and reproduced more efficiently.

The Microsoft Windows XP operating system will boot up 25-50% faster on the SSD than on other drives--good news for those in a hurry.

Wonder if they use these for space shuttle telemetry, cause i can't afford one. Gigabyte has an afford PCI card solution but its only 4GB, so wouldn't help this game since it so big.

These will overtake mechanical drives soon though i think.

Here is another cool offering they have for regular hard drives, both drives on one 3.5" form factor..

Using a 4GB drive for the swap file might be ideal.

Solid State is extremely expensive and has a limitied number of times you can read / write to the hard drive before it begins to fail. Until then, stick with the raptors.

Drawbacks aside, I just saw this today.
Adtron to offer 160 GB 2.5" flash drive
As fast as the tech is advancing it might be pretty viable if they can overcome those other issues (price, read/write limits). Two to three years maybe?

Re: Solid state hard drives a fix for hitching

Actually Windows VISTA has the ability to use even USB flash drives like RAM!

it pre-loads the most popular files into the flash drives, while its not as fast as RAM its most definatly quicker than HDD.

Flash drives are soon going to be hugly popular!.. its a great leap in technology really and will drop the price of mass storage very quickly.

Its just a shame that VISTA isnt really reccomended for Games just yet, when it does become more stable I would LOVE to pre-load Vanguard onto some flash drives

along will duel and quad core technology, dual SLI, 64 bit software etc.. it sends shivers down my spine trying to imagine the quality and speed of games in say 5 years time.
