A strange computer problem, need help

I have been playing Vanguard tonight and having a blast, I logged for dinner, came back and upon booting my computer I get a system message that avg antivirus has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. I scratch my head and click ok on the dialog box and send the error report. Then I try to start vanguard and get another system message telling me that launchpad.exe has encountered a problem and needs to shut down, send error report then decided that I should roll the computer back to saturday and still get the same to exception errors. Any help or ideas on this problem will be greatly appeciated.

You're getting those messages regardless of what you try to run? And something has caused your (avg??) antivirus to shut down?

No. So far only AVG and the Launchpad are giving me the error. I have removed AVG and attempted to reinstall it but that didn't work either. AVG has and error on installation now. I have also noticed that even though my browser is set to accept cookies that it is not accepting them.

I looked into the error messages a bit more thouroghly and this is the error I am getting. 0xc0000005
I googled that error code and found that sometimes it can be a problem in the registry, I have used a registry cleaner and I still get the same error when I try to launch Vanguard or to reinstall AVG.

Wondering if it could be a problem with ram? How would I be able to tell?

Well, this is weird. I would probably boot with my XP disk and run a repair before I tried other things (it shouldn't hurt any other files, but if you have something really special that you'd hate to lose, it'd be good to back that up).

I can't imagine how this would be a ram thing. You can run memtest or try taking one stick out (assuming you have more than one) to see if you get more or fewer errors, then swapping them, if you do want to check this.

Do you use IE or FireFox/Mozilla?

On an off chance that you might have something else going on, download SpySweeper trial and run it a couple times. See if it finds anything.

If you're using IE, I'd highly suggest switching! Will be interesting to see what happens.

I actually would second this unless you've figured it out. When I had the bad stick of ram, I couldn't start VG, and my Antivirus program wouldn't work either (Bitdefender 10).

In addition to (or instead of) Nils #1, I would try doing this. Go Start -> run -> type cmd -> type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes) and hit enter. It may ask for your Windows CD if it finds a system file that needs replacing so have it handy. Oh and "sfc" = System File Checker, it basically checks to make sure your Windows system files are ok and not corrupted/missing and such.

If that doesn't help and you've tried Nils #1 I would stress number #2 for sure, as bad RAM can lead to corrupt applications and such.
