Re: Building a Computer
Nice post. I like the bench, last time i built one 'out of the boxes' i had to use the lounge floor hehe....constant hoover use to keep the cat hairs down was a must
Can i just say one thing for anyone looking to upgrade...As the gear is changing all the time if you are considering a home build keep your ear to the ground about all the new up and comming technologies so you don't but something that turns out to be un-upgradable in a few months...eg make sure the mo-bo socket type is not on its last legs or that the graphics option you choose will be upgradeable etc....i just think back to when i got the last AGP less mo-bo with a CPU socket they were just dumping :embarrassed:

Re: Building a Computer
Great write up there kudos Nil,
can I just say be careful when tying up your cables after. Overzealous cable tidying has been the downfall of many PC mechanic's forum posts saying it worked until I "tied" everything up. Quite a few of these components have loose connections and a faulty connection is hard to detect sometimes. If all fails check check and recheck everything is pluged and screwed down. (I had this recently with some memory which wasn't seated right). I usually do my PC work in the bathroom as the floor is tiled and the radiator makes a good grounding spot ![]() |

Re: Building a Computer
I had a 5900XT running on my 300W generic PSU for more than 2 years with no problems.
however, PSU are relatively cheap I would invest in a higher rated one for futureproofing. AGP cards usually require power supplies. A quick google shows that several people seem to be able to run using an AGP 6800 with 300w. That said you need to see what else is drawing power. HDD, sound card, video capture cards and usb devices all draw power as well. Last edited by sherrjo : 02-19-2007 at 08:17 AM. |
