Euro ping...

I am running an Athlon64 X2 4600+, 2 gig of matched ram and a 7950 though a 19" TFT at 1280x1024. So i keep pushing up those sliders to find out when things start to slow down, but i do have a very anoying problem i think is ping related and thats the time it takes to draw in stationary objects as i run about...that is it takes ages for the objects to update as my PC is being told they are there by the server. My normal ping to the area where the server farm is is about 30-35ms (i use a speed tester where you can pick server locations) but in game i have 300-500 ms ping according to their little info tool. I have tweeked the draw distances, view distances etc etc but to no avail....is it the ping or the wrong combo of slider shuffling?

It's unlikely that your graphical settings are affecting the ping in any way. As to why the ping is different, that's usually the difference between the encoded conversation your computer is having with the server while in game, and the non-encoded one your ping tests.

Re: Euro ping...

Maybe i didnt explain myself clearly...2 x 12 hr days back to back at work tend to make candyfloss of the old grey matter I was wondering if anyone else was having the same prob of boulders, trees, fences etc being v.slow to update no matter what their settings as if so i would think it was the horrid 1/3 to 1/2 sec ping times causing the server sent info of 'tree comming up render it' to lag behind by a loooong way....damn i need more beer =P

Re: Euro ping...

Sorry to go off topic a little, but is there any way of improving ping? I live in the UK and play on a US server with my old guild from SWG. My ping is around 260 - 300-ish most of the time. (I haven't tried testing a EU server as I don't want to see what I'm missing, if you know what I mean)

You mean other than moving?

Assuming you have an internet connection with plenty of bandwidth (and you're not playing wirelessly), then no, there's really not anything you can do.

Some of the fancier NICs can help with packet loss, but that's not the same as ping.

Oh well, I guess I'll just live with it then. I have a 8mb BT connection and it's not wireless, well my PC isn't anyway. I don't really think the wife would be up for moving to the US, just to help with my gaming issues. I have low wife faction as it is.

Ooh. Gotta raise that up pronto. Wife faction has a big impact on all of your other factions. Have you considered doing the "Special Date" quest?

Re: Euro ping...

I refuse point blank to go wireless...i like my cat5 cable...hell, i refuse to even go wireless with my rodent and keyboard let alone my pc As for connection, i have a 4 meg line (exchange will not support 8 meg yet) and never had a problem with bad pings for UO, DAoC or WoW (or any of the FPS shooters i have played over the years). I have a horrid suspicion (not researched it yet) that if i did have an ingame /tracert addon it would not go straight from me (near london) to Amsterdam though...i would expect it to go via some part of the US via authentication servers THEN to amsterdam and back again. Either that or the hardware SOE are using is from the stone age (in the server farm).

Re: Euro ping...

Yeah I'm getting quite high ping to the euro servers, I'm on 6mb. I get great ping to FPS servers, and all is good, but I get the same ping going to america as euro.
