Is 1 gig enough?

I run the game perfectly and I have a ton of fun with it. That being said I have a friend who has tons of problems.

He has:
Sempron 2600+
1 gig of ram
X800XL

And he can't play. He get hitching most of the time and has problem standing still. The HDD is defraged. The .ini is tweaked.

Is there something i'm missing that could help him... because he is seriously getting to hate the game now.

Thank you

This is surprising, really. You say he's getting lots of hitching? That's a harddrive issue, really (if you're using the correct term). What does he have his texture detail settings at? Is this issue all the time, or only when alot of people are around or in cities?

From what he told me it's all the time... getting a max of 15FPS with lot of hitching. He run with a 1024x768 resolution and with the very high performance tag on... that tweaked again in the .ini

Double check with him to make sure that he's upped his iShadercacheSizeMD to 256, and set UsePrecaching to True.

If he's hitching that much, I'm not sure more ram will help him

Re: Is 1 gig enough?

ishadercachesize takes ram to put it for that use only right? or am i totally wrong? if it is then will it be ok to run with only 512mo for the rest (ishader 256 + 256 for the other one in sysconfig.ini don't remember the name) or do we do something wrong? how much space available should be on the hard drive VG is installed on?

Well, without knowing what the other one is, I can't really comment on how it'll work out.

I do suggest he try this one if he hasn't already. A great many people have seen their hitching problems ease at least somewhat with that change.

He could also try it at 128 and see which works better.

As far as how much space should be available on the drive it's installed in, it's unlikely that you need more than a few gigs. In beta, I never had more than 5 gigs available on my hard drive and it didn't cause any issues.

Re: Is 1 gig enough?

I just checked the other one is called CacheSizeMegs and is set to 32 by default. I had a good boost with this set on 256 on my side but I do have 2gig too and not 1.

Well I guess we will just continue to try until we find something.

Could it be the fault of the cpu? I mean a sempron is nothing near good with the cach size they have and all.

Go ahead and try the shader cache and precaching.

The issue shouldn't be the Sempron (assuming it's +, as you stated). It ran fine for a 2500 and a 2600 (both were Barton+, though).

Those K8s are good chips. They're not C2Ds, of course, but they still hold their own.

Re: Is 1 gig enough?

I've also got this problem!

My Rig:
Alienware Intel 3.46
360 gig SATA HDD + Second 200gig SATA
NVidia 7900GTO 512MB
1 Gig Ram

No matter how much I tweak the game I get poor FPS and alot of hitching!

I have tried several page file configurations, defragged, de-spywared.. I generally keep my machine VERY well maintained!

Whats all this ishader thing about?
