Laptop Vanguard

Anyone playing on a laptop?

I need to get a new business laptop, so I figured I'd get one that could play as well. With my budget, I've pretty much come to two choices: the Go7700 with 512 megs of video memory, or a Go7900GS with 256 megs of video memory. Everything else is equal.

Anyone have experience in VG with either of these cards? VG takes advantage of the extra memory, I know, but the 7900GS is a beefier card (though, it's not a fantabulous card by any means. If it were a Go7900GT, I'd have no questions here, but those get expensive because of the heat).

So, uh, opinions? I know alot more about upper-tier laptop gaming than I do about mid-range...

Re: Laptop Vanguard

Anyone know how a T series thinkpad with:

- Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5600 (1.83GHz, 2MB L2, 667MHz FSB)
- ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 64MB
- 1 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory
- 80GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm

would perform in vanguard? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Poorly. The X1300 isn't a gaming card by any stretch of the imagination, and 1 gb of ram is on the low-end. VG claims to require a 128mg card to run. I've never tested it with a 64mg card, so I can't say for sure if that's a hard-and-fast requirement or not. It might run, but don't expect to break 10 fps unless you're staring at a wall.

By the way, in response to my own question above, the 7900GS beats down the 7700. Gateway has C2D laptops with the 7900GS in them for $1600 right now. That's what I'm going with.

Re: Laptop Vanguard

well it has 64mb or dedicated ram. The card can go up and take ram after up to 256mo I think. But I guess i should forget playing on the laptop and keep it on my desktop ...

*sigh*

I have a friend who has a X1300pro and 1 gb of ram and the game is pretty much unplayable (13-15 fps in the fields, and 0 in cities).

If you can add another gig of ram, you might be able to do okay on ultra-low settings. Of course, ram (especially notebook ram) is so expensive these days, that it might not be worth it.

Re: Laptop Vanguard

Thank you for the info. Guess I'll stick on my desktop. A gaming laptop is just too costy. Mostly using it for work ... it's good enough for the purpose it use. I guess
