May wanna wait to upgrade...

I will be receiving the final part for my new gaming rig today. And to my dismay, the PCI-SIG announced yesterday, the final specification for PCI-E 2.0. Motherboards and video cards are likely to start becoming available in second quarter of 07 (Apr-Jun). PCI-E 2.0 will of course be backwards compatible with current PCI-E 1.1 slots. However, if you are like me and drop $200+ on a motheboard, and $500+ on a vid card, you don't want there to be something significantly better out in 2 months.

The 2.0 along with DX10 is capable of large improvements in performance. *sigh*. So, if this announcement was made last week when I ordered my parts, I would have held out until PCI-E 2.0. I am still gonna have a nice rig, but I may need to upgrade the mobo next time i upgrade the vid card depending on the performance gains of 2.0 vs 1.1.

This is not what I have heard. According to the reports I've heard, it will simply have more bandwidth than the original PCI-e. Bandwidth<>better performance.

I'm not convinced that the newest cards max out the bandwidth on AGP, much less the PCI-e.

The PCI-e will continue to be the standard for at least another 2 years, if not more, and this assumes that PCI-e2 is even adopted.
