This doesnt work
Finally got my Gforce 6800 256 meg. Installed and get those series of bleeps that says Video fault.
My ASUS P4s8x motherboard supports AGP 8X allegedly I downloaded the latest agp drivers for the SIS chipset prior to installation. the only system requirement that confuses is "one hard disk drive power dongle (for AGP version only) I must confess I have never heard of power dongles and have no idea if i have one on my machine!!! |

Re: This doesnt work
Maybe they are implying that you need to give the GPU power?
I don't see why that would prevent boot though. The first time I had a GPU that required power (series 5?) windows kept warning me on boot that the GPU was underpowered. (Eventually I figured out what that meant. Directions are for suckerpants. ) |

Re: This doesnt work
How many watts is your power supply? Also is it a generic one or did you pick it out seperatelly? My reasoning for my questions is a guess that there isnt enough juice to "turn over"

Re: This doesnt work
That would be cutting it close especially if it is a generic power supply that might not even be up to par for 400w. I wish you had a way to test this theory without having to go out and buy a new power supply and go through all that trouble. Are you sure that the vid card is good? Might want to find another machine to pop it into first just to get that idea out of the way first.

Re: This doesnt work
That would be my normal approach but my other machines are 5-6 years old and do not have an AGP x8 slot.
At least replacing the power supply is fairly cheap although the available bay is difficult to access and small. I guess a 450 or 480 watt supply would solve the problem if it is lack of wattage? |

Re: This doesnt work
We found out that ASUS seems to have issues with certain power supplies, too, i.e. the Neo. Not sure about your MB, but hubby's SLI sure does! And the ASUS duel video card he was trying messed up twice and he had to replace that with the 7800GTX OC ( 2 of them!)
Also, he went for the beefy 850 power supply. Don't think yours needs that, but might check the brand with tech support!

Re: This doesnt work
I contacted Evga a while ago to be sure my 350w could handle my new series 7 card. (It handled the 6800 GT just fine.) They stated that as long as I had 15a or more on the v12 line I was covered. The 6s and 7s are very close in power draw, so if you could check that we should be able to know.
But, again, I would think that unless you are having a massive draw on power it should still boot and then warn you that you are low on power. Just beeping and such would be more indicative of another kind of problem; something like the PSU doesn't like how you've chained devices. You didn’t plug one of those fans into anything else did ya? I find fans tend to prevent boot unless they are on their own lines. |

Re: This doesnt work
The fan is integral to the card, the other fans, one is driven through motherboard the other from psu unit. I dont think fans pulled that much power on their own. I will replace PSU, its 3 years old and dirty and see what happens. If it dont solve the problem I will get a replacement card. The card and MB are compatable.
