Butterfinger Kid, aka GM Verityn!
Meet John Larberg (GM Verityn, as his Sigil friends know him). He arrived in Carlsbad about the same time as Aughos to dig out his place in the Pit!
One of the more quiet people...*turns around, hearing people laughing and goes on with her thought*...Verityn seems to have some experience with gaming and Customer Support. Let's see what he has to tell us:
Q: You're one of the "newer guys" at Sigil. How do you like it?
I love it. I've been in customer support/service for as long as I've been working, but it has never been anything like working for Sigil. Though it is quite a challenge, I feel that I can definitely grow with Sigil and help develop it into something great.
Q: What is your gaming background?
My MMO background consists of UO for about 6 months, EQ from beta 3 until Luclin came out, and then miscellaneous others like AO, CoH, DaoC. I'm also a big RTS fan and I definitely like to incorporate that level of strategy to MMO raiding. Just an FYI: I can not be beat at Red Alert! Med tank rush ftw!
Q: And your favorite candy from the bowl?? /cackles
Butterfingers are mighty good, but not those Butterfinger Crunch bars. I'm talking about the delicious, crispety, crunchety, peanut-buttery BUTTERFINGER! That's the stuff!
*I would have to agree, but that one is mine. Those other 6 are yours! Thanks!*
Q: How does everyone get along, overall?
Well, everyone in our department comes from very different backgrounds and thus from time to time we have very different opinions about things. This diversity helps us to create new ideas and bring forth all new ways of doing things in the industry.
Q: Did you ever think, when you were younger, that you wanted to grow up to be a GM?
Being that I am still young, I have many more aspirations to achieve in my life time. Although, when I first started playing EverQuest I did get a chance to witness some great GM's. At that time, it did occur to me that being a GM could be something that I could do and be good at in the gaming industry.
Q: What is the hardest thing you have to do as a GM?
Back when I was just a playing MMO's there was a lot of things I never considered that GM's had to deal with. Probably the hardest thing that I've had to deal with is when to be helpful yet fair. Like for example when I go above and beyond to help a player out I have to be willing to do the same thing for every player on the server or it wouldn't be fair. People don't just come and go like in other customer support environments. Players come to the server to make it their home and everyone on that server needs to treated equally. It is something that I'm learning and will always endeavor to improve upon.
Q: Which of the "specific areas" of the GM group are you going to be in, or can you tell us?
I haven't put much thought into what my place might be as this department expands. I'm still trying to figure out what I'm good at and what I need to work on.
Q: What are your "pearls of wisdom" that you would like to impart to those gathered here today?
“When in danger or in doubt run in circles, scream and shout.” If you live your life based on this simple principle, you probably won't get far.
*...ok, so why do visions of Super Chicken run thru my mind?? (no offense, Keejay!)*
Our thanks to you, Verityn! We appreciate your time, and hope that you have a chance to meet your other aspirations sometime in the future!
Next week, find out who said, "My GM character is a Mordebi Psionicist." That should be an...interesting, if not frightening, class for a GM, don't you think?
