Re: Death Penalty

I voted for exp loss, without level loss. But as I give it more thought debt would be fine , my main concern is no skill or level loss.

Re: Death Penalty

To be honest Debt and Loss are the same thing its just how you prefer your poison. Do you like your penalty for dying like a big exp DD nuke (loss) or do you like your penalty like a DoT (debt)? In the end as long as the system they choose stings and makes people avoid and fear death, it doesnt matter what they choose.

In this one, we're all (pretty much) going to be in the same boat, so it will take me longer than many to figure things out. Call it "information overload" or whatever. BUT...once I got it, I don't want the game to baby me thru. I want to have to really understand and work thru it. And if I lose a level in the process, it's like _Slicer said...I wasn't ready to be there.

VSoH won't be for the faint of heart or those looking for a free ride to the top. Then again, it's not like the Japanese games that punish you and make things very realistic in their methods. Their philosphy is that death is death, and it's not pretty!

So, as many others have stated in various forums...VSoH won't be for everyone. Try it out and see, is all we can do!
No offense to wow it's prob the best mmo on the market atm, but no thanks if I wanted a game where you could solo the whole way I would get the next kotor (which I will, but that is not the point). The thing that made everquest fun was the challege, the fact you had to get to know others not just that it was my first mmo, becuase uo was my first . The quests and the fact that some classes are unwanted are the only things I didn't like about eq b4 pop.
Vanguard aready unless they start changing things sounds like it challenging, but not in a stuipd way. You might just have to get to know people/classes. I wish they will/would change the debt thing, but maybe it will be more balanced then eq2 wow debt:confused: . I think it is possible to have a debt death system that works ie causes people to not want to die, but in the end in is just easyier to stick with exp loss and lose a level. After all it is only beta 2 so they have alot of time to fine tune etc.

Re: Death Penalty

I prefer the experience loss with level loss because it really makes you play smarter and value your decisions. In addition, it weeds out idiots that attempt to wipe the group out of spite. In World of Warcraft, if on a public raid someone didn't get their way they could just wipe the group and even if they died it didn't hurt them.

If it hurts them as much as they would be hurting everyone else there is a chance they might not do it.

In addition, it really encourages teamwork, which is why I play MMORPG's and not the many great single-player RPG's being made.

Re: Death Penalty

It seems one of their main goals is to make everything more significant. Battles with monsters last longer, theres more downtime, and it sounds like death is going to hurt.

Re: Death Penalty

I vote exp debt with no level gain, unless all debt is paid.

I am not a level machine and don't think high level players are better than low level players.

Lower level should be fun, if vanguard is only fun for higher level than it would turn into a hell grind.

Traditional death penalty. Exp loss and level loss. I think it's a time sink and it won't stop noob from level up. The noob will either quit or exp on safe mobs at a very slow level. The punishment of death is exp loss which will take your "TIME" away.

There will be high levels with no clues on playing well in groups or using class ability properly.

A real tough death penalty IMO is exp loss, level loss(if exp lower than current level) and random item and gold looted by the mob that killed you.

Vanguard will have other things to do besides leveling.

XP loss / Level loss
I like the way EQ managed with death penalty . simple and quick, i prefer xp loss to xp debt .
If there's xp loss, why there would not be level loss ?
But the system knows problems with delevelers, trainers, corpse campers .
Anyways there will always be problematic players whatever the game mechanics are.

Xp loss / level loss is my prefered option, it makes the game a bit more challenging / dangerous.

I voted XP loss w/ level loss. As it has been pointed out, death should HURT. Of course, deleveling is a tricky thing, but I expect Sigil to avoid the potential pitfalls.

Re: Death Penalty

Amazingly enough, the majority is still voting exp/level loss, while Brad is still saying debt. I'm not sure I understand, but.../shrug

Personally, I'm at the point where I really don't care so much. I'm a slow leveler, anyway, and while I may lose points, I don't lose skill. The more I have to fight/cast, the higher my skill goes and the better it makes my character down the road. More exp with mobs and groups, or solo, even. It all evens out eventually, but you wind up winning in the long run!

Like mentioned, this world is going to have so much to do, I don't really care any more.
