Re: What does RP mean to you?

It seems to me that the OP's whining to the messageboard indicates that he isn't interested in following the norms of the community. He's looking for someone to hold his hand and say "Poor baby, of course it's ok to use shout for whatever you want." If he would have just said "Sorry" and stopped, he would have been welcomed. If he posted something a little more concilatory, rather than the snippet I quoted, he would have been welcomed. None of the beta servers were roleplay servers, by the way. So what we did in beta really has no bearing on Florendyl, does it? The whole point of having a roleplay server is that the nonRP yahoos play somewhere else, and so I suppose that makes us all rather insular and unwelcoming. And that's something I can live with. |

The question I asked was about people who feel that keeping immersion is more important than keeping humanity. It seems from your post that you have joined this "insular and unwelcoming" group of your own accord. |

Re: What does RP mean to you?
Here's my take on all of this. I'm playing an RP server because I want to be more immersed in this game. This isn't the first attempt to do this in an MMO either. Let me explain (sorry another WoW comparison)
I played on a PvP server to start (bonechewer) and it was ok for a while. Pretty much all the crappy chat was in the noob zones. Then they had the well intentioned idea of a global LFG channel. So now people could spew their crap for everyone to hear. I was so fed up I left my wonderful 60 tauren war behind and went and joined a RPPVP server (maelstrom) I really noticed no difference between the two. Same global conversations, same crappy jokes, same barney's play house community, etc etc. I posted a similar thread to this on the WoW forums. "What's up with the RP" sort of thing. I was assured that I just had to find the right guild, blah blah blah. I hung in there with my now 60 undead rogue and even paid to have my warrior transferred to my new server (I missed him) Eventually the community wore me out with it's attitude. There was no roleplaying or even close. There might have been a few private guilds that did it but I can't see how successful they were with all the obstacles they had to stay in character. I was really only playing at the tailend of my time there because I was waiting for the vanguard release so it was no big deal to leave. I did, however leave WAY earlier than I had planned. WoW wasn't my first game, it was my first attempt at RP online and I was really let down. I'm oldschool to back in the days of the first Atari and D&D before it was AD&D (heh heh, parents back then thought we were into devil worship because we played) So here I am again, another RP server. I'm trying my best to step into my wood elf ranger's shoes and flesh him out as best I can as a living thing. I know our game is new and we're just getting our feet under us. I believe once we get our forward momentum we'll be ok. These are my suggestions to making a successful RP server: 1) A clear set of rules for do's and don'ts on a RP server, something which could be viewed in game would go a LONG way IMO. 2) This is the biggest one, ENFORCEMENT of said rules (where blizz failed) I say if a person is warned enough times by some sort of moderator they get blocked from the RP server and their character plus all possessions gets transferred to some other server. Some people might call them the "chat nazis" or things like that but you need someone with authority to enforce the rules. I gotta tell ya, when the players have to do it all the time that gets pretty old to watch too. Before I quit WoW it seemed all I did was report people for racial comments, spamming garbage over and over (yeah, chuck norris) Then I got fed up and wrote a nasty email and cancelled my account. It was along the lines of "It shouldn't be my job to police your server up in a game. I'm here to play and have a good time, not to wear a badge. If you can't find a way to enforce the rules you set up then I don't want to waste my time here" 3) Tweak the chat channels/modes/ranges to accommodate RPing or clear define the ones we have as what is what. I hope this posts helps and my above suggestions get noticed and talked about. The OP certainly isn't whining. That's just my 2 cents, for what its worth.

Re: What does RP mean to you?
Fade,
"RP Preffered" is the problem.. either the server is RP or it isn't. since it's neither here nor there, they can ignore the policing issue if they so desire, leaving it up to the players to become "rp-nazi"'s just to have an rp enviorment in an "RPG".

I know that regionsay is being used as the ooc channel which is a great idea because those who don't wish to listen can switch it off. As for Florendyl, it's just getting on it's feet. There's hardly any chat in shout anymore and it's starting to get rare to see anyone talking about WoW or EQ. I think alot of folks will be defensive about anyone being ooc when they feel they shouldn't because, again only in my opinion, if the server starts off role play then we have a good chance of keeping it that way. I would imagine that it's harder to change a server that started off as non-rp and that may be what alot of folks are panicking about. Not all us RP'ers are evil ![]() |

Re: What does RP mean to you?
My take it this, if you are in a Fantasy World that you ahve sat down and thought about what race, class, and probibly a 10 page bio on yourself. As you read the Background of your persona, why then would you not RP. This Game is not the cookie cut out like WoW. might as well live in it. To me it never matter if my server was a Rp server or not, in other games the Rp server came out well after we where running amok.

Re: What does RP mean to you?
i like that it is roleplaying preferred because i do light rp'ing, i know the basic background for my char, almost never talk about rl things, and would rather be in a world without the constant chatter about rl issues/events, but i dont always "stay in character" meaning that maybe my dwarf doesnt always say aye, thar, etc. so the preferred part allows me to essentially be able to justify not always talking like my char should while still staying about from rl ooc prating. (and also being able to turn off other rp elements, such as hating all darkies, and other such things, not just the talking thing)
EDIT: also i talk about it as game, which i think is rather frowned upon by many rp'ers... |

The shout channel is so annoying, but I can't bring myself to turn it off because I honestly like helping folks who are lost. I did want to just pop on and say that RP is happening all over on the servers - and not just in specific guilds. Last night, I was playing my lowbie Halfling warrior (I feel dirty just saying that - I'm embarrassed to have the character) and I stumbled upon a group in Riftseekers - all unguilded (I'm unguilded myself) who played all kinds of characters. It was alot of fun. Then, after that group had to break up, I saw a younger Druid say he was having a hard time finding a group in region chat, so we wandered around, getting our rears handed to us by a variety of different things (especially spiders) and doing a little RP. It was great as well. I really like this server. Sometimes, it almost seems like I'm one of the few on the boards here who's actually enjoying the game very much. Maybe it's because I'm still quite low level (no time to play), but I'm having a blast logging on and playing with all of you.
