Re: Soldier Sentenced to 100 years in prison.
The one real problem that the death penalty solves is that of repeat offenses. If you can do it once, you can do it again. If you were crazy when you did it, you might go crazy again, though in that case a life sentence without parole would suffice. As a society we cannot abide people that commit crimes of this nature.

Re: Soldier Sentenced to 100 years in prison.
No matter whatever situation, war or otherwise, that should not be a question.
Cheesus.... really.... Only thing worse than murder is rape, and for that no sentence is good enough. And this guy did both rape and murder... (death is not a good punishment as that is just letting the criminal of easy. Death penalty is only the ilussion of goverments that it will free up prison space for the rest of the bastards. ;p )

Re: Soldier Sentenced to 100 years in prison.
you tell a rapist murder they are only getting jail time, and knowing over pop. they WILL get time off and go before a senticeing commity to try to get out altogther. OR you set up some scafolding and have every channel broadcast the Hanging of the perpitrator..
which one will do you think will slow the number of people about to commit the same crime? does not matter how lost you are, very few will knowing do something they know if cought will get themselves killed.

The problem with the death penalty though is that it's totally hypocritical. If you condemn the act of killing another human being you are not serving justice by sentencing that person to death as you are now as much a killer as the person being sentenced is/was. We have laws against murder because society feels it is morally wrong to take another human life yet we have death penalty which does the same action of taking away human life. If a human has no right to take another person's life then why do we execute our criminals? It's also important to note that the United States is the only industrialized country that actually has a death penalty. The UN opposes the death penalty because it goes against human ideals.

/sarcasm It is entirely possible that the death penalty, despite having some justice in it, is not a deterrent. However, I know from personal experience that criminals fear death enough to run when they hear a gun. If we were to expedite a death sentence to every convicted rapist and murderer, I'd be willing to bet that there would be fewer who take the risk. As it is now, many get off with jail time that they don't complete. |

We don't execute humans, except by mistake. We are executing monsters.

By the way I'm for the death penalty, but you should take responsibility for it. What I mean is the weight of the death should be human too you. Do not marginilize what it is, or you risk becoming the monster yourself.

Well good for them. I'm not particularly fond of the Iraqi people but murder is a bit below me.
