Silly Spellings

Hi All,

I am just making conversation here.

What do you all think of intentionally miss spelling words?

COOL - KEWL
LOOT - LEWT
HOT - HAWT
FAT - PHAT
We have all seen about a million more, .... .
those are just the 4 that came to mind.

I see that a lot in games and I think it is sort of silly.

And it seams most of the time the silly spelling actually
takes more effort to type that the correct spelling does.

( Example HAWT = 4 different key strokes while HOT = only 3 )

What do you all think?

Re: Silly Spellings

Totally agree!

I have a Norwegian friend that goes positively postal on people when they say "kk" instead of "ok" or "okay." It's rather funny actually.

I'm not sure why people do speak like that. Don't even get me started on the more advanced dialects of "leetspeak"

Meh!

I am guilty of my own versions of shorthand ("ye" = "you" and "yer" = "your"), but I truly try to stay away from the examples you listed.

Irksome!

Re: Silly Spellings

Fat and Phat have two different meanings though.

Fat means well fat as in a fat person.
Phat means cool, as in that tune was phat!

Same with hot and hawt.

Hot generally tends to mean temperature, while hawt generally tends to be about a females appearance (I was careful with my words there ).

Correct me if I am wrong but it is all about subtle differences in meaning which is normally conveyed using your tone of voice. Obviously this is not available so it must be conveyed using spelling.

Re: Silly Spellings

Kethra,
Ye = they way people actually spoke back in medieval times.
"Yer" is short for "Your" wich is in fact, a short cut.
So at least it can be explained away as " It's just more easy to type "

Cromulent
I suppose your right.

Me personally I would just say "cool" instead of Phat or Kewl. Since cool is in the English Dictionary. Also, I would totally get it if someone told me that so and so was hot. Rather than Hawt.

But I get what you mean.

still yet..... I think I will stick to words that are
in the English Dictionary.

I did actually find Phat in the Urban Dictionary though! hahaha

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a massive fan of using these words but I do understand where people are coming from when they use them.

I guess it all comes down to what you are used too. For example some American slang I find incredibly hard to decipher as I am sure some Americans find it hard to decipher English slang.

Swings and roundabouts in the end.

I am not a fan of these words, but you just made a point against your argument, Ohmar.

What does cool mean? It means cold. At some point in the past (early 50's) it entered the English vocabulary as slang and became so widely used that eventually it was added to the dictionary.

Many of these words likely will share the same fate, especially the word "Phat".

Well, It really isnt a point against my own argument.
However this really is not what I meant the conversation to be about. I was really referring to folks takeing a word like cool and re-spelling it like Kewl in what is essentually an attempt.... to be cool, I guess.

And again Just for conversations sake.

Re: Silly Spellings

Well it is a conversation.

Usually one can tell from the context how a word is being used.

Example:

That pan is hot.
Geez, look at that guy, he's so hot. (shoot me for sounding like Paris Hilton, please)
The icecube is cool.
That's a cool idea.

Common sense really. No need to change the spelling around.

On the argument about cool's meaning being changed through time, becoming slang. That's how most slang comes about. However in these arguments, cool and kewl supposedly mean the same thing, (We're still talking about slang here, not the temperature meaning - ambiguity is usually dismissed with context.) thus the spelling differences are just... meh.

To be fair though, that is exactly how language develops. Back in the 17th (or 16th not entirely sure which) century there was no defined way to spell words in the English language. It was only after someone (can't remember who) came up with a standard spelling structure for the language that we type the language the way we do.

After all the differences between American English and English are prime examples of this. For example colour and color and the many other slight variations on spellings.

It just so happens that with the massive increase in the availability of communication between people that differences in language and spelling become more apparent and as a result more widespread. The internet is likely to be the catalyst for the biggest change in the English since its inception. I doubt our children in 50 years will speak in the same way we do today.

That is another pointless post that I am sure no one is really interested in .
