Re: Silly Spellings
It used to annoy me so much. It doesn't anymore since I see it more like the typing equivalent of a verbal accent or regional type thing... some folks do it, some don't. Some more extreme than others. Since most internet conversation isn't english class or writing a formal essay or any such things, it makes sense that people do this. You take shortcuts in your speech all the time and no one gets onto you about it unless you're giving a speech or in a class... unless you just say something really off or dyslexic.
Laughs I've noticed are can be somewhat distinguishing of one's location: hihihihihi = spanish? HUAHUAHUAHUAHUA = all people from Brazil do this for some reason. lol / rofl / haha = standard american/european laugh kikiki = I think this is korean. |

But all I am saying is..... Kewl is not a short cut for cool, in fact it is more physically challenging to type it the wrong way than the right way. So I am assuming that folks are going out of their way to do this in an attempt, to be Cool. Or was it Kewl? It's tough to say. Other Examples would include Lewt - loot Hawt - Hot Bewt - Boot Wewt - Woot It just seams like people, In general, are basically, looking for as many ways as possible, to include the Letter "W" in their typing conversation. RESPECT the "W" Perhaps, ( since this is something that has developed in the past 4 to 6 years ) maybe George "W" Bush was behind it. hahahaha -Ohmar

Re: Silly Spellings
Well, this is WoW thing, but as alliance we said "kek" all the time. It's the horde's "lol".
Alternate spellings are simply fads. Most notable, Phat lewtz! Being used to insinuate a greedy player. Like someone else said in this thread. I'll throw in my wewt, or wo0t every once in awhile but I'd say I dont over do it. Now, people that talk like they are text messaging each other, that's just flat our rediculous. |

Re: Silly Spellings
roflcoptor should be the only thing used! I work in an internet cafe/LAN gaming centre and gamers tend not to type like that untill some guy comes into the game, gets a few good kills and says something like omgz i'm hawt and then it all starts.

Re: Silly Spellings
True that often only one person starting to talk that way make many others go that way in a discussion. I don't bother as long as it does not take me longer to comprehend than it takes to write it if the comprehension suffer greatly because of this i find it a bit frustrating in my opinion

Re: Silly Spellings
Furthermore from Iendan's post, if you were speak like we do now in front of Shakespeare, I'm sure he'd feel pretty disgusted.

English has changed a lot since Will's day, and many things they considered totally normal in terms of language use we now raise eyebrows at - and vice versa.I used to bemoan the changing of my beloved languages (I speak 2 fluently and one not-so, and on top of that I'm a lit. graduate), and complain about "the youth of today" mangling words... but ultimately language is much more fluid than we tend to think it is. Not so long ago, connection was "connexion" and so on - there are hundreds of examples of how language has changed in the last few years/decades/centuries. I think it's an unstoppable tide, and not necessarily a bad thing. Coming to the States after living in Europe all my life till then has also shown me that English-English and American-English (let alone Canadian-English and, for that matter, French & Canadian-French) are totally different beasts. We spell things differently, obviously, but there are words in use here in the States that I considered archaic or odd in England, and the reverse is true also. (I can't think of any off the top of my head but they're there. One instance I run into all the time is the American hatred of the split infinitive - which isn't technically a bad thing to do, and indeed its avoidance can skew the meaning of a sentence - but using it here in the States seems to carry a grammatical death sentence. Except if you're Captain Kirk, of course. )What worries me more is that we don't seem to be teaching people the value of consistency (in spelling, for instance) or even the basic ground rules - flout them if you must, but know what they are before you do. |

Re: Silly Spellings
I doubt Willie would be disgusted. William had a very small vocabulary for his time, so oftentimes he would make up words. Many words we have today are attributed to William, ie accessible, bold-faced, perplex, and homely.
