Skinning: Mangled vs. Ratty

So I went past 100 skill in skinning and now I get Ratty hides. (Sorry don't remember the names of the levels).

However, some things require mangled hides. I can't figure out how to get them.

When I skin low level mobs I still get ratty hides, just fewer. I tried switching back to the basic skinning knife, same result, fewer ratty hides.

There doesn't appear to be a recipe to convert ratty to mangled hides.

Can't use ratty hides in place of mangled, I tried.

Anyone know the solution to this problem? How do I get mangled hides?

I'm pretty sure I was getting mangled hides off wolves and boars, and ratty hides off bears. Might be mistaken, but I don't think I am.

Also...I've got a quick question. How do you get mangled bundles? Mangled strips/hides are grand...but I can't figure out where to get the bundles (unless you need a recipe or something).

Unless something has significantly changed, skinning lower level mobs should give lower tier hides - so for mangled, levels 5-12 or so should give mangled. However, someone else mentioned getting ratty hides off lower level critters so now I too am confused. The only skinner I have has only just passed 100 skill and is still working on low things - which are predictably dropping only mangled (in the CB area).

Edit - mangled bundles are an outfitter recipe, which you should get very early on - was level 4, but they may have dropped it to level 3 to be a bit more logical.

Ah right...I thought it might be. Figured it would've been a level 1/2 recipe, since other level 1-3 recipes required mangled bundles.

As for the ratty hides...I found some off bears in the "Save the Baron's Deer" quest in Tursh. Think the bears were only level 6.

i'm having a hell of a time getting the mangled once i passed 100 as well.. along with my other issues with harvesting (see other post)

yep, you have to go to a diff table and have the "recipe" to make mangled bundles out of the hides.

I just passed 100 and found that bears were giving me ratty and everything else I tried to skin continued to give me mangled. The bears were slightly lower level than the other things I was killing...

I wonder if it's a glitch with the bears or if it has to do with your skinning level relative to the mob's level. I hope it's a glitch otherwise at some point it would be impossible to get mangled short of buying it, which unbalances things. Other harvesters can always just go back and find copper/jute/basalt but if skinning level means you get higher tier skins off the same mobs.... :unsure:

Ive also noticed bears are just a tad bit harder to kill than other mobs their own level. Maybe this is intended?

Bears are the culprit. I was killing those new Tursh Bears, and they were giving ratty.

Went over to Maplelynn and killed some Howlers, they gave mangled.

I thought maybe it was just those Tursh bears, but I guess it is all bears, based on the comments above.

Anyway, mystery solved.

My bears were the Tursh ones over by the academy also.

I found some lvl 5 bears called Ursagor near Leth Nurae, and they give mangled. Must be the Tursh bears that are bugged.
