Crafting specializations

About the crafting specializations:

I'll quote a paragraph from Wikispheres:

Quote:
Outfitters work primarily with leather (leatherworker) and cloth (tailor). They make armor, the work clothing for harvesters and crafters, as well as normal clothing.

Leatherworkers make leather armor, leather gear, and saddlebags.

Tailors make cloth armor, cloth gear, and bags.
Does this work like in Horizons, or more accurately like in EQ2, where at one point you stop being the previous generic profession like Outfitter, and become a full-fledged Leatherworker or Tailor, or does one still need to keep raising his Outfitter skill because there are high-level Outfitter recipes?

For instance, to make a boat, I suppose on needs a sail. Will it be made by a Tailor (then the Wiki should add that to the description), or will one need to contact a high level Outfitter for his sails?

Also, who makes furniture? Some people say it's the carpenter, others that it's the Mineralogist (stone furniture). Both?

I really wish that Sigil published a complete Crafting professions breakdown, with at least the names of the recipes. I'd be really PO'ed if I figure out at one point that I have wasted my time on a profession I shouldn't have simply because Sigil hasn't published enough information and I had to take it from a site that was wrong.

Re: Crafting specializations

No it's not like Horizons. You will still want to skill up in Outfitting. A lot of recipes are outfitter based and can be made by both carpenters and minerologists. The reason you're aren't seeing a lot of info on specific items yet is that they got the stuff done for houses and ships first and are now fleshing out the other recipes. A whole bunch of focus items etc. were in the last patch. I expect a lot more to go in soon.

Re: Crafting specializations

Think of your specialization as your focused trade, and outfitting as your general trade. If you chose leatherworking you will still need secondary parts made with the outfitting skill and work orders use outfitting quite often too.

Re: Crafting specializations

hmm... im also curious, can you work ALL the trades if you so desire? like in old eq? i remember seeing something about that a while back but i cant remember if it was saying you could do all the trades or if you were locked in, cause i know to build a boat you need a little bit of everything...

That's why I like this crafting system. The trades are interdependent, so you'll need items created by another type of crafter to make your boat, if you are an artificer.

No you can only pick one trade. You can switch, but switching dumps you back down to level 1.

Re: Crafting specializations

I think they're trying to strike a balance between eq 1 and eq 2 crafting. If my notions are correct, you will be pigeonholed into one of three crafting types, but will be able to make everything in that type, so 3 classes instead of 9. However working with crafting I was able to see a noticeable challenge in that the time and energy that goes into upping even one facet of any of the three crafting trades is intense, and so you wont likely see too many people who are well versed in every aspect of their trade. Ie you will see people who generally finish vs those who generally refine.

At level 10 you specialize in one of the two specializations for each profession. So for example you become a Leatherworker or Tailor (can't be both) as your specialization and should not see any work orders or recipes for the other specialization (this was still being cleaned up at end of beta). You do continue to advance in the Outfitter skill which has it's own associated recipes and work orders. So you end up with 2 out of the 3. Refining is it's own skill set and appears to allow you to refine both materials associated with your profession.

Technically you can be both, but then you can't be an outfitter. Which I agree wouldn't make a lot of sense since you'd need to buy all your components. Does anyone have any idea how the skill caps work yet? I was doing both refining and finishing and they seemed to have seperate caps. But I only made it to lvl 14. Any thoughts?

Cool Re: Crafting specializations

I was hoping for more simplicity with the crafting but found it to be one of the most complicated I have ever run into. I was constantly second guessing what the (complication phase) would call for only to find I had a better chance of shooting dice than figuring that out. I am anticipating that the Live Game will have most, if, not all of the bugs ironed out. At any rate I'll have a couple characters created to handle the crafting and couple more for the adventuring..I think overall I will be very pleased with SOH.
