Ships and Sea-faring Vessels

I would like to ask, has anyone gotten to the point where they have been able to craft and test ships?

To me, this feels like a very exciting and enjoyable method of group transportation. If I recall correctly, there hasn't been an instance of player-controlled ships since the days of Ultima Online. Therefor, I'm very eager to see how they manage to balance sea-faring vessels here.

- How difficult is it to build ships, from an Artificer standpoint? How expensive are they, and how skilled must you become?
- What are the mechanics of them? Are they an inventory item you can call out in the water and put away? Do they become tangible items that move as you direct them, or are they just replacements for your own character model and little else?
- Can you take on passengers?
- How small and how large do the ships get? Are there smaller boats for 2-4 people? Larger ships for 10+ or more?
- How are the ships controlled?
- Are there limits where you can bring out a ship? Can you only float on the ocean, and not down rivers?
- Can ships be damaged, or outfitted with weaponry?

Any detailed information would be wonderful!

i agree!!! i cant wait to get my own ship, as far as all building and size stuff i dont really know, but i saw a movie and it looks like the ships go from small 4-6 person ships to giant vessals, but i dont know if you can actually invite people on to your boat, it would deffinatly be cool if you could!

- How difficult is it to build ships, from an Artificer standpoint? How expensive are they, and how skilled must you become?

Difficulty depends on a lot of things so not sure how to answer this one. There are many steps and it will take some time. They don't cost much in terms of cash, but they do require a lot of resources. Sloop quests being at 20, Caravel at 30 and Galleon at 40.

- What are the mechanics of them? Are they an inventory item you can call out in the water and put away? Do they become tangible items that move as you direct them, or are they just replacements for your own character model and little else?

They are an inventory item that you click to summon. You then get on board by pressing "U". If you have the boat in your inventory, then you can approach the helm and press "U" again to take control. We let the camera zoom farther out than normal to make it easier to sail.

- Can you take on passengers?

Players can get on your ship by approaching in and pressing "U". They do not need permission to come aboard.

- How small and how large do the ships get? Are there smaller boats for 2-4 people? Larger ships for 10+ or more?

There are three sizes, Sloop, Caravel and Galleon. There is no limit to the number of people you can have on board. The ferry boats are Galleons.

- How are the ships controlled?

You take control of a ship by pressing "U" while standing at the helm. "W" increases speed, "S" decreases speed, "A" turns left, "D" turns right. No reverse.

- Are there limits where you can bring out a ship? Can you only float on the ocean, and not down rivers?

There are limits to where you can spawn a ship as well as depth limits. The Sloops are coasthuggers, the Caravels are moderate depth boats and the Galleons are deep water boats.

- Can ships be damaged, or outfitted with weaponry?

Not yet.

Any detailed information would be wonderful!

Re: Ships and Sea-faring Vessels

I can see definite room for abuse with anyone walking onto your ship. Then again they *are* putting their character in your hands so if you just happened to say sail out to the middle of nowhere and I dont know logged off or something then they probably would be too happy.

In game only.

Re: Ships and Sea-faring Vessels

Don't think we'll be able to do that but we can make them regret though.

going in the middle of the ocean and going AFK for an hour or 2 for example?

But i guess the recall option would make that pointless
