Re: Ships and Sea-faring Vessels
A good question though. What would happen if you and your friends are sailing on your ship and then... oops! you lose internet connection and go LD. Does your ship disappear right out from under their feet? It's swimmin time!

Re: Ships and Sea-faring Vessels
Wow that's awesome we have official Developers registered here to answer our questions! I guess it makes sense with the closing of the OVF.
Anyhoo, on a different subject than the OP I was wondering if Mr. Kwags could lemme know if Rogues will be able to steal from other players on PvP servers. I'm not in beta, I'm deployed a million miles from the US . If the current PvP rules dont allow player theft could it be possible in the future on an alternate rules server?*Edit, I guess I do have a question about boats as well. How customizable will they be? I know colors and different design types, but can we put furniture etc. on them? And if we can use boats as storage then we won't be able to unsummon them, so boat decay? But what's the point of storing items on your boat when it's completely accesible by everyone? Re: Ships and Sea-faring Vessels
What I've heard about the Artificer level is that you need to be a level 20 Carpenter (Artificers that work with wood) before you even can get the first quest which leads to the first boat recipe. Also both ships and houses need component from the other crafting professions, for example the Tailor (Outfitter who works with cloth) provides the sails.

Re: Ships and Sea-faring Vessels
Thank you Kwags for the wonderful information! A few people posted some good and interesting concerns, and I thought of a few myself, so I'd like to follow up with some questions:
- Connection Loss. How will this affect the boat? Is the boat connected to the player, and will it stay online for a little while after being disconnected? Most mages it seems has a "recall group to safe point" so they might be okay. - Entrance onto the ship. This makes sense in the fact that it quickly allows passengers to hop on, and allows for enemies to board the ship. However, as some people confessed, there is a bit of concern that people will take advantage of this or that dire results could follow (harrassment, privacy concerns, etc.). Will housing be the same way, and if not, is it a possibility that the ship will have an "access list" to allow specific people on? - Do you intend ships to require resources gathered from various professions? Lumberjacking of course, but stone/metal? Will they require components produced by other crafting professions? Whichever the answer may be, will housing construction follow the same idea? - There was an excellent description of the ship types. Is it correct to assume that the ships will thus have limitations? Example: will only Sloops be able to run up and down the more shallow rives throughout the world? Will Caravels be able to generally get around as a middle-of-the-road ship, with limitations only in the most shallow or most deep waters? And will Galleons generally be confined to deeper waters, unable to approach the coast too closely except in the ports of cities, and certainly unable to go upstream? - How customizable do you intend for ships to be? Specifically, do you wish people to be able to outfit specific parts of the ship to boost certain areas (such as meneuverability to make turning sharper, sails to increase maximum speed, hull upgrades to add defense if ships can be attacked, etc.). Another thought would be the type of furniture you might be able to put on the ship, decorate the inner cabins, etc. - Will collision detection be included on the ships? While this makes a lot of sense for realism (and it's hard to believe two ships passing straight through one another), it is equally terrible to imagine a person unable to move around because they are boxed in by a fleet of boats. Too many people owning ships could result in crowded oceans, and having collision detection might be....bothersome. - More of an economy question here, and I'm not sure if it even applies, but...will there be a system wherein the use of ships are used for making money? My thought would be trade routes...certain items with no particular value, purchased at one port and sold for a higher price at another port, offering people and their friends the chance of using the ship for trade routes. Thank you again for your thoughts Kwags! Sea-faring vessels really are a rarity in online worlds, and it seems to present a factor of adventure, battle, and exploration that is unique. I enjoy the image of setting out from a port city with a handfull of close friends, heading towards an island we have never set foot upon, occasionally getting waylaid by a vicious sea beast or two, and even running across a friendly vessel out there. |
