Wintersgate

Bonfires roar and reflections dance
Wintersgate commeth with frozen hands
The last of Gates before winters dark.
Hold back despair with the warmth of heart

Hammer and chisel ring in the pitch
Songs to the seasons weave betwixt
Jongleurs strumming fingers twitch
Victuals aroma waft in the rift.

Ale tankards clank
And eyelids tip
As hours wind down
With each sands skip

Soon with a sigh
The first tinge of sun
All must hasten to
Make sure they’re done

For when the first rays
Of the Lifegiver slip
Over the mountains
To caress the new ‘liths*

That which possesses
The purest Wish
Shall not suffer a Death
Of slow melting drips

No indeed shall become
This Grand work of Heart
The beacon to ward
Off the winters long Dark.

* Archivists Note: ‘liths seems to be a shortened
form of the word Monoliths. This refers to the
large ice sculptures the people erect depicting
their hopes and desires for the coming year.
