It's not only quest gear, it's all gear, droped or other wise. Once the top guild of the game, not just the server, tells everybody else what the best gear is, that's what most pepole want. The only differance right now is that droped gear you get right after killing the mob, and quest gear you get right after talking to a NPC after killing the mob.

It would be great if unusual to have small number of pieces of unique gear. It would not be impossible to use the item database to track such items and know when they finally exit the game and need to be replaced.

Another thought, some very powerful unique artifacts should not be dropped or recovered through quests but simply carefully hidden in remote corners of Telon to be discovered by explorers. The Lore would explain their existence and history but not their location although careful study of books and manuscripts could provide further clues.

imo lootable gear should be ok, questable gear should be good, lootable gear from epics very good, and questable gear which has you killing epic encounters should be the best.

For instance, if you go into a dungeon full of gnolls then the gear that drops off the gnolls should be blue(using gear conning system because ive been playing eq2 lately ), gear from gathering gnoll teeth should be white, then at the end of the dungeon is a dragon for some reason (lore should explain why its there), gear that drops off the dragon should be yellow and gear you get for getting dragon scales should be orange.

hope that makes sense.

This kind of system works best when you have lootable PK.

Bob may have the only Fire Sword of Endless Suffering on the server, but if you (and possibly a few friends) can bring him down, then it's yours.

It allows those limited items, but also allows for them to be distributed.

On a PVE game, it just wouldn't work. Bob would get the only Fire Sword of Endless Suffering and a great deal of others would whine because he had an unfair advantage.

I understand your point. I was thinking of such gear more as Guild trophies than practical weapons. The Fire Sword of Endless Suffering may inflict +1000 fire damage but reduces the users Strength and Agility, so much they can hardly wield it because its original god like owner was so strong and agile it did not bother him. Its value is its place in lore.
